Justin Trudeau is winning over women with his stand on public breastfeeding

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau decided to take a stand for breastfeeding in the most beautiful way: by posting a picture on Twitter which shows Sophie doing just that.

Last week was World Breastfeeding Week —  an attempt to raise awareness and recognise "that breastfeeding is a key to sustainable development, we will value our wellbeing from the start of life, respect each other and care for the world we share" — and the couple decided to publicly support the cause by sharing a sweet picture of Sophie breastfeeding their youngest son, Hadrien.

The photo was captioned with a call to support breastfeeding moms in public (in the hopes of ending the stigma that still surrounds the practise of public breastfeeding). It read, "This World Breastfeeding Week, let's support mothers to breastfeed anytime, anywhere. - SGT #WBW2016."

This tweet is obviously important because the Trudeaus are both very high-profile, and it will hopefully serve as a means to generate awareness and support for breastfeeding mums in the future because unfortunately the practise still remains somewhat controversial. But feeding your child whenever and wherever it's hungry is really one of the most normal, natural things that a mother can do, and to suggest that women cannot and should not feed their children in public is discriminatory.

Breastfeeding and bottle-feeding should enjoy the same rights, and both should be seen as normal. This isn't the first time that Sophie has shared her thoughts on breastfeeding, either, as she revealed during an interview with Yahoo Global News' Katie Couric earlier this year that she was still breastfeeding her 2-year-old son. She said, "I think it's a woman's choice. I breastfed my three babies. I also gave them formula. I think it's a beautiful bond, and I encourage it, but I don't judge."

But is this picture of Canada's first lady something that the public actually want to see? It seems the Twitter reactions to it are somewhat divided.

There are many messages of support for the Trudeaus' message. There are even a few Americans wishing they could cross the border.

As well as people applauding Trudeau for his stance on public breastfeeding.

Not everyone is impressed with the post, as tweets call for Trudeau to "run the country" while others have mocked the message of being able to breastfeed "anytime and anywhere."

Some critics can't even believe that there's something called "breastfeeding week."

It's sad that in 2016 people are still so judgemental of women who choose to breastfeed in public. But at least the fact that there's even such a thing as World Breastfeeding Week (and political figures willing to rally behind it) proves that we, as a society, are (slowly) headed in the right direction.
