Identical twins defy 'one in a million' odds to give birth only hours apart

Identical twin sisters Tina Hammond and Louise Huckerby have defied odds of a million-to-one to give birth to their babies on the same hospital ward, only hours apart.

More: Twin sisters give birth to sets of twins — twice

The 23-year-old sisters from Leicestershire, England, had been given due dates five days apart — April 10 and 15. But Hammond went into labour early on March 21 and Huckerby was admitted to the same maternity ward a few hours later.

Hammond gave birth to daughter Delilah at 6:41 p.m. and Huckerby welcomed son Reggie into the world at 11 a.m. the following day.

The twins say they do "everything" together and they even shared a room at Leicester Royal Infirmary after the babies were born.

Joan Morrissey, senior midwife at Leicester's hospitals, said the odds of the women having their babies so close to each other "must be a million to one."

"When the twin sisters chose to give birth at Leicester Royal Infirmary we would never have imagined they would be in labour and birth so close in time and location to each other," she said. "We are delighted we could accommodate the sisters in the unit in beds next to each other while they recovered with their newborns."

Hammond and Huckerby's experience isn't the first tale of twin sisters giving birth on the same day. Last year Katie Bowden gave birth to daughter Ella on the same day as sister Amy Meredith-Davies delivered son Henry, 26 miles away. And in 2014 identical twin sisters Sarah Fidler and Heather Richardson gave birth on the same day, despite having different due dates.

Scientists continue to be intrigued — and baffled — by the extraordinary coincidences that occur involving twins. Some of these serendipitous tales simply can't be explained, which is why we love hearing about them.

Whatever happens during labour it's a pretty nerve-wracking experience. What could be better than having your sister — identical twin sister at that — in the same hospital, going through the same thing?

Hopefully little Delilah and Reggie will have the same bond their mums do. (And we're predicting a lifetime of joint birthday parties.)
