It's a boy… and a girl!

From perfect little party favors to personalized decor — a his-and-hers boy and girl baby shower to welcome twins in style!

chevron stripe baby shower

Recently I was lucky enough to host a baby shower for my very dear friend who’s expecting two bundles of joy — a boy and a girl! I wanted a theme that would both celebrate each baby and reflect their mom’s modern style. The result? A dusty pink and light aqua Chevron Chic soiree!

Beyond teddy bears and building blocks

While it’s tempting to go straight to shower-theme staples, like teddy bears or building blocks, don’t be afraid to skip pre-packaged themes and tie everything together with unifying prints or patterns instead. For this shower, I opted for pink, aqua and gray zigzag chevron prints that were displayed everywhere, from the invite to the stamped Mason-jar lids and chevron cupcake toppers I found on Etsy . The food and dessert spreads were also displayed with custom chevron-print labels, as were verses from children's books that we framed for nursery art, thanks to another Etsy favorite .

Setting a stylish cake table

The cake table is the perfect stage to display your theme… and your creativity. While the chevron end of the theme was woven throughout, the cake table is where the chic part really came into play. The cake was actually baked with love by the grandma-to-be . We topped it with a sweet His and Hers custom cake banner. For the rest of the cake table spread, I enlisted help from Pop Culture Desserts, who helped me up the ante on the chic factor with sweet touches like bite-sized brownies topped with powdered sugar, skewered and tied with a gray bow; white fondant cake pops with gray and white striped straws to match the Mason jars; mini powdered doughnuts; chevron-iced shortbread cookies and rich mini flourless chocolate cupcakes sprinkled with sparkling white dusting sugar. The mostly-white dessert spread was rounded out with pink and aqua chocolate-covered candies and a chevron table runner. Over the cake table we hung white paper pom-poms from clear wire and round paper garland that had alternating hues of pink, aqua, gray and white.

Simple personal touches

Because she was expecting one of each sex and it had been a few years since her last baby, I knew the mom-to-be could use a hand stocking the babies’ closets. I asked each guest to bring a boy or girl outfit to hang on a clothesline with a personal note for the twins, handwritten on chevron stationery cards. The mom-to-be loved reading all the notes and the guests enjoyed seeing all the adorable little outfits that the other guests brought. Since I’d called in some reinforcements from Etsy on the chevron theme, I wanted to make sure I added some homemade touches, too. I created these simple DIY S’mores favors in brown paper party bags, tied with a dusty pink and aqua chevron-print tag that read, “Twins: S’more to Love!” and stuffed them with an assortment of flavored marshmallows, graham crackers and mini chocolates.

Would you avoid a holiday birth?

So you’re due on or around Christmas and your doctor has offered to induce you a week or so before the big day. Do you take her up on it, or do you wait until you go into labor on your own?

So you’re due on or around Christmas and your doctor has offered to induce you a week or so before the big day.

Elective induction before Christmas

Do you take her up on it, or do you wait until you go into labor on your own?

Ask anyone — they’d probably prefer to not be in the hospital for Christmas. And a Christmas birthday? Most of us have heard the horror stories about kids getting ripped off in the gift department. But if you really had a choice, would you induce early just to avoid the possibility of a holiday birthday, or would you prefer to let nature take its course?

No way

Quite a few moms we talked with thought that choosing a baby’s birth date for what amounts to convenience was not the way to go. “I would never,” stated Lindsay, mom of two. “My child's health means more than a day on the calendar.” While many inductions go very well with no ill effects on the mother or child, sometimes it can lead to a cascade of medical interventions that sometimes lead to a C-section — or the induction may not work at all because Mom’s body wasn’t ready. Even worse, sometimes the baby isn’t ready for life outside the womb and serious complications can arise.

Not so bad

While being in the hospital on a major holiday has its drawbacks, it can also be kind of nice. “My baby was born on Christmas Eve, so we also spent Christmas in the hospital,” shared Amanda, mom of four. “It was very peaceful and really quite special to spend Christmas Day in the hospital with my new baby. The halls were quiet and visitors were few. It’s a good memory.” And Claire, mother of one, said, “In fact, if I had to be induced for medical reasons, and Christmas Day was one of the options, I would pick it!”

Probably avoid

Scheduled C-sections are often a different story — they are usually offered to prior C-section mothers who don’t wish for a vaginal birth after cesarean trial. “Any future births of mine will be planned C-sections, so yes I would avoid Christmas Day and the three days before,” explained Liz from Iowa.

Different scenarios

And there are other reasons moms have to avoid specific dates, whether they be Christmas or not. Rachael, who lost her daughter last year to SIDS at 5 months of age and now expecting her third child, told us, “If they told me we need to take this baby out a week early, which would be the day Scarlette died, I would request any day but that. A baby born on Christmas wouldn’t bother me, but a baby born on my baby’s death date would be really, really hard to swallow.”

Expectant mothers should carefully consider any reason for electively inducing labor — holidays or not — and work carefully with their care provider to understand what the risks may be. In many cases, inductions go well, but they don’t always, so you want to be prepared in either case.

The royal pain of hyperemesis gravidarum

As the world was buzzing about Kate Middleton's hospitalization for hyperemesis gravidarum — severe morning sickness — in the very early stages of her royal pregnancy, Holly Madison announced she, too, was suffering from it in her seventh month. Is "severe" morning sickness real, or is it the new "exhaustion" for the rich and famous? Let's face it, many moms-to-be have HG — it's just not headline news. You don't have to be a princess or a Playboy model to suffer from this all-too-real — and pretty miserable — pregnancy condition.

Severe morning sickness for kate

As the world was buzzing about Kate Middleton's hospitalization for hyperemesis gravidarum — severe morning sickness —  in the very early stages of her royal pregnancy, Holly Madison announced she, too, was suffering from it in her seventh month.

Is "severe" morning sickness real, or is it the new "exhaustion" for the rich and famous? Let's face it, many moms-to-be have HG — it's just not headline news. You don't have to be a princess or a Playboy model to suffer from this all-too-real — and pretty miserable — pregnancy condition.

If news of Kate Middleton's hospitalization for severe morning sickness had you running to kiss the toilet — if you even made it that far — you're not alone. Many moms suffer from morning sickness — nausea and sometimes vomiting during pregnancy .

When is Kate Middleton due? >>

Morning sickness 101

No one knows for sure what causes morning sickness, but there may be triggers. Miriam Erick, a registered dietician and author of the book, Managing Morning Sicknesssays, "In my experience there are some background triggers which seem to make NVP worse — smells, motion, noise, hot humid climates, cold damp climates — have to close windows so smells stay in — bright lights, constipation, fatigue/sleep deprivation, altered electrolytes and hunger."

Any kind of morning sickness can be a drag, but if you have hyperemesis gravidarum it's much worse, and can pose risks to you and your baby.

HG — yes, it's real

And it's really miserable — not just the disease itself, but how people may just brush off severe morning sickness as being all in their head while telling her to eat a couple of crackers, drink some ginger ale and get on with the day.

More about hyperemesis gravidarum>>

Kimber MacGibbon, RN, director of education for the Hyperemesis Education and Research Foundation, explains, "Women are not exaggerating when they say they vomit endlessly until dehydrated, despite their best attempts to drink and eat. When women are this sick, they do not need to be pushed to eat, continue working full- or even part-time, or to try and tough it out or will it away. You know that is simply not possible. Fighting HG only worsens it. They need those around them to rally support and ensure proper medical care so the mother can rest and have the best chance at surviving HG with a healthy baby."

What to do if you think it's HG

Don't be embarrassed. Don't shrug it off. Call your doctor and midwife — it's not all in your head. If you're unable to keep any food or drink down, the nausea and vomiting won't stop, and you've lost more than 5 percent of your pre-pregnancy body weight, it's likely HG. Just like Kate, you may need to go to the hospital to receive IV fluids, and possibly be admitted for a few days or more. "There is no substitute for fluids," Erick says.

When HG is no longer in the news

Now that the Princess is out of the hospital — and hopefully not experiencing severe morning sickness as much anymore — people shouldn't forget about hyperemesis gravidarum. "We hope she will be open about her experience and care so that when the beautiful baby is born healthy, women will feel more confident requesting needed treatment from their health professionals, and health professionals will take the initiative to learn more for the benefit of their patients," says MacGibbon.

Having it all: Mom by day, doula by night

$
0
0
Lately, it seems like moms are doing more than ever — they're working, cooking gourmet meals and crafting up a storm — all while raising their families and maintaining marriages and relationships at the same time. Whew! So, what do you think? Can moms really have it all?

Jen Quesada

Meet Jen

Although Jen Quesada is technically the mom of four children , in the past four years, she has helped over 50 newborns enter the world — all through her work as a doula.

our life is
an adventure!

Jen became passionate about educating women about their birthing options after switching from a planned OB-assisted hospital birth to a midwife-assisted birth at 30 weeks into her pregnancy with her first child, who Jen gave birth to in water, after 16 hours of labor. "I was not only empowered by this, but became acutely aware that many women, like me, didn't know there were options beyond the hospital." With that, Jen took those first steps that would eventually lead her to the road to become a doula, nearly three years later, while pregnant with her third child.

We're just going to come out and say what you're all thinking... How does Jen do it? How does she juggle the "having it all" combo plate of being a mother of four and a career that is dependent on the schedule of pregnant women going into labor? It's giving you contractions just thinking about it, isn't it?

Jen Quesada

A day in the life

"We are pretty much four kids, four crockpots and four minutes from chaos at any given moment, and then add in that my cell phone could ring and send me out the door for four or 24 hours [to a birth]... our life is an adventure!" Jen candidly shares. Is this making your head spin yet? Just take a moment to imagine your life as a doula, where that morning trip you'd planned to the grocery store to pick up dinner ingredients suddenly turns into an entire day at a birth... and when you're on-call, as Jen is most of the time , all it takes is the ringing of your coveted, fully-charged cell phone.

But seriously — how does it work when Jen needs to leave for a birth and she is in the middle of life with her kiddos? Step 1: That charged cell phone, which is Jen's lifeline to her clients. It must have the ringer all the way up and be in an easy-to-grab place at all times . Step 2: A bag of supplies that is ready to go and packed with all of Jen's doula essentials — striped socks, snacks for her that won't make a laboring mama gag, client paperwork and shoes that can easily be cleaned. Step 3: A house that's stocked with kid-friendly foods, ingredients for meals and supplies to last for the foreseeable future.

Having it all for me is about being satisfied, being passionate, being settled with myself

Jen Quesada

A support system that dreams are made of

The essential piece in Jen being able to make her version of "having it all" work — an incredible support system who can, and will, swoop in and take care of her kids if she needs to rush out the door.

Jen says, "It starts, first and foremost, with a loving husband who believes the work I do is important." And it's certainly the truth. Jen recalls this story that puts it into perspective: "I remember coming home from a birth that was over 24 hours long that had been emotionally taxing for me. I walked in the door, feeling like a zombie, and he placed a plate of hot food in front of my grateful face, which I devoured. Then, he handed me a melatonin, tucked me into bed in a dark room and left with the kids to the park for hours. At some point, he tucked a sleeping baby next to me to nurse and the next thing I knew, it was 14 hours later. That's a doula's husband. He is amazing."

It continues with a community of friends who are happy to help the Quesada family when needed. "They forfeit their own sleep to come to my house in the middle of the night and love on my teething and fevered baby while I run off to a home birth, they answer my Facebook SOSs and texts to the tune of baked goods delivered to the hospital when I've run out of snacks and can't leave, they've nursed my babies when I was at a long birth and driven 20 minutes to bring my baby to me so that I could nurse her," Jen heartwarmingly shares. And continues with a point that every mom can relate to: "They are friends, but mostly they are moms who know how important the birthing day is, and are willing to support not just me in their sacrifices, but these families as well."

And last, but certainly not least, are Jen's parents, who she describes as "incredible" and her "recharging station," and who seem to know exactly what she needs to do the work that she does as a mother and as a doula. Sometimes that means simply having a spot to retreat to before going home after a long birth for "a decompressing cocktail and some Food Network."

Jen Quesada

Having all of what you already have

It may seem like Jen could wrap up this whole "having it all" concept with a pretty little bow and call it a day — a family that loves what she does just as much as she does , a career that she is beyond passionate for and that she integrates into her worldview with ease and delight, friends who are an "unfailing safety net of love," Jen admits that there are times when things are out of balance due to her career. "It's hard to find the balance. But, I try to find that week or that day or that hour that I can balance it and rejoice that somehow it all works out."

And now, for the big question... What does having it all mean to this mom?

"Having it all for me, " Jen shares, "is about being satisfied, being passionate, being settled with myself." She continues by saying, "Can you have it 'all?' Probably. But most days, I'm not sure I need to do it 'all.' The love of my husband, holding the little hands of my children who touch my heart, and looking into a laboring woman's eyes in the moment that she finds the strength to roar her child earthside will always be more than enough [for me], if I never have it all."

Cutest celebrity baby bumps of 2012

$
0
0
2012 brought on a Hollywood baby boom. We take a look at five of the cutest baby bumps of the year, from first-time moms to parenting pros. Who worked the baby bump the best this year?

Reese Witherspoon

In typical fashion, actress and style icon Reese Witherspoon kept quiet about her pregnancy with her third child, her first with husband Jim Toth. When photographed during her pregnancy, 36-year-old Witherspoon showed off a breezy style, alternating between jeans and baseball caps and flowy dresses, and always looking comfortable. Toth and Witherspoon welcomed son Tennessee James in September. Tennessee joins brother and sister Deacon and Ava, Witherspoon’s children with ex Ryan Phillippe.

Vanessa Lachey

First-time mom Vanessa Lachey wins cutest baby bump posted to Twitter. The 32-year-old mom wasn’t shy about sharing her full-term belly with her followers shortly before baby Camden was born. Lachey is taking a healthy approach to working her way back to her pre-baby body. “I was a big workout girl when I was pregnant, especially in the beginning,” Lachey told Shape Magazine. “I took the stairs whenever possible and walked around just to stay active because it’s all about how you take care of yourself during pregnancy that matters after.”

Could Kate Middleton be having twins?>>

Drew Barrymore

Though shy about her baby bump, Drew Barrymore gets points for staying comfortable and fit during her pregnancy with daughter Olive. She was photographed heading to yoga, a great activity for expecting moms to stay stress-free and limber while gearing up for labor and delivery. Though Barrymore never announced her pregnancy, she was seen publicly at various times in her glowing state. Olive is Barrymore’s first child with husband Will Kopelman.

Megan Fox

After reportedly only gaining 23 pounds, Megan Fox is already back in slender shape. It’s no wonder that earlier this year, she had one of the cutest baby bumps in Hollywood. The 26-year-old first-time mom looked glitzy and glamorous when spotted around town. Fox spoke to E!News about her love for newborn Noah. “I know people always say that,” Fox says, “but I love him so much it hurts, and it's an interesting feeling to have because I never felt that before." Noah is Fox’s first child with Brian Austin Green. She is also stepmom to Green’s older son, Kassius.

Kristen Bell

Expecting her first child with Dax Shepard, 32-year-old Kristen Bell is already showing off a cute baby bump. Shepard and Bell are not married, and they’ve made this choice because of their convictions regarding marriage equality. The couple doesn’t want to marry until their gay and lesbian friends have the same rights. "We're just standing up for what we believe in. Period,” Bell told The Advocate. Shepard and Bell have been engaged for two years.

Worst celebrity baby names

Many of these wacky and weird baby names left us scratching our heads and wondering — what were they thinking?

The honor of the worst baby name of the year goes to Bristol Palin’s ex Levi Johnston, who named his daughter Breeze Beretta. Yes, as in a Beretta gun.

Hawaii Five-O star Alex O'Loughlin is close behind for worst baby name of the year after naming his son Lion.

Uma Thurman made the list because she gave her daughter the ridiculously long baby name of Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence. Although, we do like her nickname of Luna, which ironically is not in her actual name.

Check out the complete list of the worst baby names of the year:

  • Magnus - Sugarland's Jennifer Nettle's son
  • Rocky James - Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr.'s son
  • Wilhelmina Jane - Natalie and Taylor Hanson's daughter

New celebrity baby name trend: No names!

This has also been the year of celebrities having babies — and not announcing the name! True Blood star Anna Paquin had twins this year, but has kept both the names and sex of the babies a secret .
Singer Adele had a son this year, but has yet to release the name and actually faces a fine in the U.K. for not registering his name. The Wonder Years star Fred Savage is another star who has yet to announce the name of his son.

Pregnancy: Coping with unsolicited opinions

It's inevitable: From the second you share that you're pregnant, you're bombarded with unsolicited advice — from in-laws to complete strangers, everyone has an opinion. With a few tips and a sense of humor, you'll be able to navigate nine months of unsolicited opinions, old wives' tales and even the most absurd advice with your sanity intact!
Pregnant woman with friends

It's inevitable: From the second you share that you're pregnant, you're bombarded with unsolicited advice — from in-laws to mom friends to complete strangers, everyone has an opinion.

9 Months of advice

With a few tips and a sense of humor, you'll be able to navigate nine months of unsolicited opinions, old wives' tales and even the most absurd advice with your sanity intact!

Doctor blame-game

If you're overwhelmed with old wives’ tales and aren't up to listening to a theory about how your baby can steal your beauty if it's a girl, or you need to dodge a risky morning sickness remedy from a well-meaning grandmother, "My obstetrician says... " is always a good place to start. When all else fails, blame it on the doctor. It's an easy out, and it reminds everyone that you do have an expert advising you.

Mum's the word

If your birthing method, your position on vaccines or other decisions that you're making for you and your baby are at odds with your in-laws' opinions, sometimes it's just better not to engage with them over it. While it's tempting to try and educate them about why you're choosing to have a home birth or are opting not to circumcise, consider staying quiet and saving your sanity. If you're never going to see eye-to-eye on a controversial pregnancy or childbirth topic, it's better to avoid conflict and keep a few things to yourself.

Stranger intervention

A smile and a nod as you move along, or a simple "interesting" can help you diffuse well-meaning but often-annoying strangers who seem to be drawn to pregnant women like magnets. If you find yourself stuck in a store line with them or can't easily walk away, try the stranger advice trifecta: smile, nod then distract. Acknowledge them with a quick smile and nod, then hop on the phone, grab a check-stand magazine to read, or quickly find another distraction. If you're the non-confrontational type, this is a great way to say thanks, but no thanks.

Agree, until the novelty wears off

While most people genuinely feel they're doing you a service, or simply enjoy reliving their pregnancy experiences by sharing them with you, some people love to give advice because it makes them feel like an expert. They'll take every opportunity to educate you, and the only way to put an end to it is to agree with them until the novelty wears off. When you encounter these advice-givers, try agreeing with, “Yep. You're absolutely right,” or, “Agreed. My doctor told me that very thing this morning.” If you have nothing new to learn from them, they'll ultimately move on.

Look but don't touch

Whether it's extended family or complete strangers, advice-givers tend to have one thing in common: They often like to get up close and personal while they dish out their opinions. More often than not, that means going straight for a belly rub. Physical contact is one area you might be compelled to draw a hard line on with a knee-jerk, "Don't touch." If you're not the just-say-no type, try a quick block with the hand partnered with, "You don't want to do that. My morning sickness kicked into high gear today and I'm this close to losing it again." Then, smile as they suddenly find it in themselves to respect your personal space.

Tips for picking
a baby name

If you are gearing up to pick the perfect baby name for your child in the upcoming year, it is time to brush up on these baby name resolutions. Whether this is your first child or third, you are expecting twins or are adopting, check out these tips for picking the perfect baby name.

Resolutions aren’t just about losing weight, organizing or getting out of debt. If you are expecting a baby and are searching for the perfect baby name, our baby name resolutions will help you avoid many of the common baby name mistakes many parents fall in to.

Tip: Check out our list of the top 100 baby names and try to steer away from the names at the top of the list if you are looking for a more unique name.

I will think outside the box

Most parents who regret their baby name choice say it is because they picked a name that was too popular. Not sure if your name is in danger of being overused? Pay attention to the names of the babies and kids at the parks or at stores. If you love the name Mason or Olivia, but have heard a couple of kids with that same name you might want to consider a different name — unless you don’t care that your name choice is a popular one.

I will think twice about picking a name with a weird spelling

Even though you may not necessarily want a popular name, there is something to be said for picking a name that is easy to pronounce and spell. If you name your child Ryan, but spell it Rian or decide to name your daughter Emileigh instead of Emily, be prepared for you to have to spell it out and pronounce it to friends, family, teachers... the list goes on.

The bottom line is when it comes to creative baby name spellings, what looks cool on paper doesn’t always translate well into the real world.

I will look to the past for ideas for the future

One baby name trend we love are old-fashioned or vintage baby names. Many of these classic names are easy to spell and pronounce, yet still sound unique and fresh. Some examples include Milo and Jack for boys or Pearl and Delilah for girls.

I will use the middle name as a buffer

If you pick an unusual baby name or one that has a different spelling, consider using the middle name as a buffer by picking a classic name that can be used if your child wants to as he or she grows up.

I will be inspired by celebrity baby names, but won’t copy them

Even though Beyoncé named her daughter Blue or Reese Witherspoon named her son Tennessee it doesn't mean you should too... unless you want people to say things like, “Oh, you named your son Kingston... like Gwen Stefani?”

You can be inspired by celebrity baby names, but think twice about copying them. For example, if you love how Reese picked a destination name, consider naming your son Austin or your daughter Brooklyn. Instead of naming your daughter Blue, you can name her Sage or Rose.

I won’t go with names that sound too much alike when naming twins

Things can get confusing fast if you name your twins names that sound too much alike, such as Hayden and Aidan or Ava and Ada. You can pick names with the same first letter, just make sure there is a clear distinction between the two, such as Madison and Max.

Special considerations when naming children who are adopted

Many parents who are searching for a name for a child they are adopting struggle with deciding if they should keep the birth name or change it. Although every circumstance is different, many parents have decided to incorporate their birth name as a middle name as a happy medium. If the child you are adopting is older, letting him weigh in on this decision is a good idea. Some may want to completely change their name, other children may want to hold on to it.

Christie Lynn Smith welcomes a baby

Just a few days before Christmas, actress Christie Lynn Smith and her husband, actor John Fortson, welcomed a second baby into their family. Smith and Fortson shared exclusive photos of their beautiful bundle of joy with SheKnows, along with some special details.

Exclusive photos and interview with Smith and John Fortson

Welcome to the world, Joshua Taylor Fortson! Christie Lynn Smith and John Fortson had their second baby on December 22, 2012. The newest member of the Fortson family, weighing in at 7 pounds, 4 ounces and measuring 20 inches, joined big sister Abby just in time for Christmas.

Christie Lynn Smith and her newborn baby

SheKnows talked to Smith and Fortson, who also shared exclusive photos of their precious new baby. "He has beautiful blue eyes, a button nose and the sweetest lips and the softest brown hair," Smith gushed. "I’m in love with this little guy. We are both doing great! And my husband and I are thrilled with our little one’s arrival."

Naming baby

Christie Lynn Smith new baby

Everyone always wants to know how parents chose their baby's name, so I of course had to ask! "Joshua was a name we always liked. Joshua seemed like a friend. Someone sweet, strong and fun," Smith said. "We chose Taylor for the middle name based on the same qualities. And his initials will be J.T., which sounded like a little surfer to us."

Dad John Fortson is a big surfer. Smith, who says she knows her kids will be surfers too, also surfs herself. "Our daughter Abby Ryder, who will be 5 in March, loves swimming and the ocean, and John already had her out on her first lesson. So look out for J.T. in the surf soon!"

Smith's birth experience

When I asked Smith about her birth experience, she said that she'd been having Braxton Hicks contractions since week 30, so she knew her body was ready to have Joshua for a while. "These last few weeks — they were getting much stronger and I felt I was going to have this baby early," she shared.

Joshua's due date was January 3, 2013, but, as Smith says, "Joshua had other plans!" Her water broke in the early, early morning hours of December 22 and later that day, her son was born.

"My contractions were painful, but my OB said, 'Well, there is a reason they are called 'labor pains.' I think this second time around I was a little calmer and more focused and so I could embrace the experience a little more," Smith shared. "The birth was amazing. I touched his head as he came out. I was excited to meet my son. It’s truly a miracle."

Dad's love

Dad John Fortson is already an amazing father to Abby Ryder, so having another baby was a dream come true. "John says he was in awe," Smith told me. "He kept smiling at Joshua, staying by his side." Fortson was present for the entire birth, holding Smith's hand, encouraging her, cutting the umbilical cord and even helping to hand Joshua to Smith after the birth. "He's in love again," Smith said.

“Joshua’s a sweet little guy, a part of me has been passed along," Fortson explained. "I feel love and responsibility. I feel fatherly.”

Siblings at last

Christie Lynn Smith's daughter and new baby

Big sister Abby is settling into her new role nicely. "Abby keeps saying, 'He’s so cute.' She’s so sweet and gentle with him. She even gives him skin to skin tummy time in the morning in our bed. She is always looking for some way to help out. It is still a big change for her," Smith told me.

The couple has made an effort to make this entire time special for Abby by celebrating her role as big sister.

A special Christmas gift

Little Joshua really was a gift for Christie Lynn Smith and John Fortson. "Santa was really good to us this year!" Smith exclaimed. "We came home from the hospital on Christmas Eve. My parents had just flown in the night I went into labor. Perfect timing!"

Congratulations to the Fortson family! We're so happy for you. And I have to say it: What a cute baby!

Learn how to prevent and identify preterm labor

Being pregnant for the first time has its ups and downs. On the bright side, you don’t know what you don’t know, so you don’t worry about things you might worry about if, well, you know… you knew. Alternately, you worry about every little flutter, kick and pang. But would you know how to identify preterm labor?

Being pregnant for the first time has its ups and downs. On the bright side, you don’t know what you don’t know, so you don’t worry about things you might worry about if, well, you know… you knew.

'But it's not time yet!'

Alternately, you worry about every little flutter, kick and pang. But would you know how to identify preterm labor?

If it’s your first pregnancy, you likely have no idea what preterm labor feels like, and you might not know the best response.

According to the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy, preterm labor is “when contractions begin to open the cervix before the 37th week of pregnancy.”

Don’t you feel better? I mean, we all know what it feels like when our cervix opens, right?

Of course not. That's why the guide also describes three key signs and symptoms of preterm labor.

What you might experience

  1. Uterine contractions — possibly painless — that feel like a tightening of your abdomen. When I began preterm labor with my second child, my abdomen felt like concrete. I could have bounced a brick off my belly button. There was no question it was contracting; we just didn’t know what that meant.
  2. Contractions accompanied by low back pain or a feeling of heaviness in your lower pelvis and upper thighs. I didn’t have these symptoms at all, yet I was still diagnosed with preterm labor. I’m so glad I called the triage nurse to discuss my symptoms; my second pregnancy really taught me that my OB-GYN’s nursing team never minded a phone call.
  3. Changes in vaginal discharge, such as light spotting or bleeding, watery fluid leaking from your vagina or a thick discharge tinged with blood.

Dr. Myra Wick of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, is board-certified in both OB-GYN and Medical Genetics. She also co-authored the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy.

“Our OB nurses review educational materials concerning preterm labor with each of our patients at the time of the anatomy ultrasound, typically between 18 and 20 weeks,” Dr. Wick says.

“This includes precautions and instructions to call our OB triage nurses with signs or symptoms of preterm labor. If the information reported to the nurse is concerning for preterm labor, the patient will be instructed to come to the clinic or Labor and Delivery for evaluation.”

What may cause preterm labor?

According to the March of Dimes, in nearly 40 percent of premature births, the cause is unknown, but studies suggest four main causes of spontaneous premature labor:

  1. Infections/Inflammation
Studies suggest that premature labor is often triggered by the body's natural immune response to certain bacterial infections, such as those involving the genital and urinary tracts and fetal membranes. Even infections far away from the reproductive organs, such as periodontal disease, may contribute to premature delivery.
  2. Bleeding
The uterus may bleed because of problems such as placental abruption . Bleeding triggers the release of various proteins involved in blood clotting, which also appear to stimulate uterine contractions.
  3. Stretching
The uterus may become overstretched by the presence of two or more babies, excessive amounts of amniotic fluid, or uterine or placental abnormalities, leading to the release of chemicals that stimulate uterine contractions.
  4. Maternal or fetal stress
We all know stress is not our friend. If an expecting mom experiences ongoing stress, or the fetus experiences physical stress , the fetus may produce a stress-related hormone called corticotrophin-releasing hormone . CRH may stimulate production of a cascade of other hormones that trigger uterine contractions and premature birth.

Now you feel stressed about stress, right? Breathe!

“Patients frequently ask about work-related stress,“ Dr. Wick says. “We see a lot of pregnant patients in stressful positions: Surgeons, oncologists, nurses lifting heavy patients. The vast majority work right up to delivery without significant complication. Just recently, one of our own residents was working the night shift in Labor and Delivery right up to her due date!“

Survival rates

The earlier in pregnancy a baby is born, the more likely he is to have health problems, reports the March of Dimes. But advances in medical care mean even babies born very premature are more likely to survive today than ever before, according to the March of Dimes.

The March of Dimes reports babies born earlier than 23 weeks have a much smaller chance of survival than babies born after 23 weeks.

“About 9 out of 10 babies born at 28 weeks survive,” March of Dimes reports. “But many have serious health problems... Premature babies have less time to develop in the womb than babies who arrive on time. This puts them at greater risk of medical and developmental problems... Between 23 and 26 weeks, every extra day in the womb increases a baby's chance of survival by 2 to 4 percent.”

The Mayo Clinic’s Dr. Wick says, “We now define viability at 23 weeks; this is referred to as the limits of viability. Our neonatologists counsel the patient, ideally before delivery, regarding the survival and outcomes if delivery were to occur at a given gestational age.

“Survival rate in the U.S. after delivery at 23 weeks is less than 25 percent. In addition, there is also significant morbidity for infants born near viability including infection, bleeding in the brain, problems with lung development, necrotizing enterocolitis , and long-term cognitive problems,” Dr. Wick adds.

Real stories of preterm labor

“I went into labor at 26 weeks with [my son], and [physicians] were unable to stop my contractions so I delivered him at 2 pounds,” says Joanna. “[It was the] scariest day of my life.” Tristan is healthy now, but the family happened to be visiting out of town when Joanna’s contractions began, so they spent six months in the hospital.

"Survival rate in the U.S. after delivery at 23 weeks is less than 25 percent."

Women who have given birth early once tend to have other early births, as well.

Joanna’s daughter arrived at 33 weeks, weighing five pounds. “Luckily, she was healthy and did 10 days in the NICU, which was a cake walk compared to [our son],” she shares.

In my situation, Charlie arrived at 33 weeks, weighing 4 pounds, 14 ounces, because he had fluid in a lung cavity and needed to be delivered.

His sister, Mary Emma, born 17-1/2 months later at 36 weeks, came a week earlier than preferred after testing well for lung development. She weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces, and our physicians were concerned her size would get dangerously large .

Preventing preterm labor

”In many cases, we don’t know what causes preterm labor,” says Dr. Wick. “However, there is a ‘laundry list’ of reported risk factors including infection, drug abuse, smoking, multiples , placental problems, problems with your cervix , procedures on your cervix prior to pregnancy, history of preterm labor with previous pregnancy, poor nutrition or very low body mass index and inadequate prenatal care.”

Patients with a history of preterm labor may be offered progesterone supplementation to prevent recurrent preterm labor; there is no evidence that progesterone supplementation will prevent preterm labor in women without a previous history, or in women who are carrying twins.

Dr. Wick emphasizes, “The simplest advice is to establish a healthy lifestyle prior to pregnancy, which you continue into your pregnancy!”

What now?

If you do begin preterm labor, relax. Neonatologists help stabilize babies born prematurely every day. In fact, Dr. Wick reports that approximately 12 percent of infants in the United States are born prematurely, with almost 2 percent delivered before 32 weeks.

If you receive your care at a hospital without a NICU, your baby may be transferred to a hospital with a NICU where neonatologists will provide special care for your preterm baby.

Dr. Wick says, “The most important factors in preventing preterm birth include avoidance or discontinuation of unhealthy lifestyle practices associated with preterm labor , and establishing good prenatal care.

Know

As with any health concerns during pregnancy, signs or symptoms of preterm labor should be reported to your health care provider immediately.

How to cope with baby envy

$

When your uterus aches at the mere sight of a pregnant woman, an ultrasound photo on Facebook brings you to tears, and you can’t bear to attend another baby shower, you’ve got baby envy. The first step to coping is acknowledging it.

It's ok to want what you don't have

When your uterus aches at the mere sight of a pregnant woman, an ultrasound photo on Facebook brings you to tears, and you can’t bear to attend another baby shower, you’ve got baby envy. The first step to coping is acknowledging it.

If you have been trying to conceive your first, second or even third child and it's not happening, the months can seem like decades and every baby-related thing can have you on edge and in tears at the drop of a hat. It's a grueling process and can take its toll month after month seeing negative pregnancy test after negative pregnancy test. Don't push your feelings aside; it's OK to acknowledge the green-eyed monster every now and again.

These simple tactics will help you keep your emotions in check and embrace your envious feelings:

Find a cycle buddy

Having a friend who is also longing for a baby and has been trying to conceive will not only provide you with the support you need, but allow you to do the same for her. She'll be there to help you realize you are not alone in this journey and you'll do the same for her. You can commiserate with one another the next time each of you has to pretend to be happy when a colleague announces her pregnancy. Beware that your cycle buddy may end up pregnant before you do, but at least she'll understand your disappointment a lot better than others.

Consider unfriending or blocking unwanted posts from Facebook

Facebook is a wonderful way to keep in touch with family and friends across the country and should be used as a form of entertainment. As soon as you begin dreading what pops up in your Facebook timeline, it's time to take control and use the blocking feature until you are feeling stronger.

Get your baby fix

If you have a friend that has just had a baby and it's making you jealous, instead of giving in to that emotion and being bitter, why not spend a little time with them and get your baby fix? There is no time like the present to practice being a parent and, let's face it, nothing feels quite like holding a newborn baby. The new mother is sure to welcome the break too!

Focus on the positive

Turn your negative thoughts and energy to things that make you smile — a great workout, cuddling up with your Kindle and the latest bestseller, or since you are still kidless, why not plan a romantic getaway? If you already have children, devote more one-on-one time with them because as soon as you have more than one , that kind of time isn't going to be easy to come by.

Don’t beat yourself up

Trying to conceive might take longer than you expected and make you do and think crazy things. Hopefully one day you'll be on the other side of the baby-making spectrum, and because of what you're going through, you'll be sympathetic to those who may be trying to conceive.

Icelandic teen named “Girl” battling to change her name

Iceland's strict baby name policies

One Icelandic teen is suing her country because the name her mother gave her, Blaer, isn’t on the country’s list of approved names and is considered "masculine" so they changed her name to Stulka — which translates to “Girl” in English.

Here in the United States where baby names like Moxie Crimefighter and Blue Ivy hardly make us bat an eye, it is hard to imagine not being able to name your child whatever you wish. In Iceland, however, parents must choose from an approved list of 1,853 girl names and 1,712 boy names.

Icelandic mother Bjork Eidsdottir named her daughter Blaer, which means “light breeze,“ only later to find out that name wasn’t on the approved list after her child had been baptized. The country of Iceland has since identified 15-year-old Blaer as Stulka, or “Girl,” on all of her official documents, including her passport.

“I had no idea that the name wasn't on the list, the famous list of names that you can choose from,“ said her mother.

Iceland's baby name rules

Iceland isn’t the only country that has strict baby name rules. Germany and Denmark also require parents to pick from their approved names. Some interesting baby name rules in Iceland require that the name “be adaptable to the structure of the Icelandic language and spelling conventions” and “does not cause the bearer embarrassment.“

In addition, they do not have any unisex baby names and they state that girls cannot be given a boy’s name and vice versa. It sounds like Jessica Simpson’s daughter Maxwell Drew would have been out of luck!

As would Uma Thurman , as “no person can have more than three personal names.” Due to the fact that the letter “C” is not in Iceland’s alphabet, they have also rejected all “C” names, including Carolina and Christa.

The name Blaer deemed "masculine"

In Blaer’s case, NBC news reports that the country didn’t accept it because it “takes a masculine article, despite the fact that it was used for a female character in a novel by Iceland's revered Nobel Prize-winning author Halldor Laxness.”

The 15-year-old teen said she is taking her case to court and is prepared to take it all the way to their Supreme Court if the decision isn’t in her favor on January 25. “So many strange names have been allowed, which makes this even more frustrating because Blaer is a perfectly Icelandic name,“ said the teen's mom. “It seems like a basic human right to be able to name your child what you want, especially if it doesn't harm your child in any way.“

Do you understand Iceland’s laws in protecting children from having a unique name that may cause them embarrassment — or do you think parents should be able to name their child whatever they want?

Toys that teach

Based on child development research, the following guide will help in your selection of toys for various age groups. Some playthings are recommended for more than one age category, as children of different ages often enjoy the same toy, each playing with it at his or her own level.

Are you looking for developmentally appropriate toys for your child? There are certain milestones your kiddo is meeting as she ages and you will want to choose toys that help her grow socially as well as physically. We've broken down the recommendations based on your child's age and what she is doing at this point in her life. These types of toys will help entertain her the most — and help her develop.

Birth to 6 months old

Abilities and interests

Experts agree that even babies benefit from toys. Infants use their senses to learn about their world. For the first few months of life, babies are unable to grasp objects with their hands, but enjoy exploring with their ears and eyes. Therefore, toys that make noise or feature high-contrast, black-and-white or brightly colored images are especially appealing to newborns and young infants. Once infants can reach for objects, they enjoy toys that are textured and safe for mouthing. Remember, to avoid dangerous entanglement, toys never should be hung or attached to a crib, playpen, stroller, infant seat or around a child's neck with elastic, string or ribbon.

It was the name of our godfather... Blue, we just loved it.”

“We have always believed in the names within our family having a deeper purpose and for us, Jagger Joseph Blue was certainly one that came from the bottom of our hearts. She is beautiful, happy and healthy, which is what is most important, and the name makes us smile each and every day,” she said.

The old wives' tale goes that lack of sleep throughout pregnancy is good preparation for motherhood. But really, all you want is a good night of sleep so when the little bundle of joy does arrive, you're well rested for motherhood.

Sleep during pregnancy

Your mind is racing, you're up all night — will the baby be alright? Is it a boy or girl? Am I ready for the responsibility? The list goes on and on. But, sleep is very important for expectant mothers. Rest now ladies, you need it!

Here are some pointers, products and items to help you get that much-needed sleep that moms-to-be require. Hopefully you will slowly be able to return to "Susie Sunshine" with a comfortable sleep pattern.

Sleep challenges during first trimester

You might find that you spend the greatest amount of time resting during the first three months. Between morning, noon and evening sickness, and your body working double time with the additional hormones, you'll find your bed the equivalent of a chaise lounge in the Hawaiian afternoon sun, umbrella included of course!

"Try to rest your head on your desk for 20 minutes or so and set an alarm... "

However, it's not at all easy to slumber during the first trimester. For example, you're "enjoying" the constant need to pee. You uterus is now growing and pressing against the bladder. Try drinking liquids throughout the day and cutting back before bed. Leave a night light on in the bathroom or make sure to have laundry baskets and dog beds moved out of the way to make midnight trips more of a two- to three-minute experience instead of an Amazing Race-style scramble.

If you can nap whenever you choose, more power to you. If not, try to rest your head on your desk for 20 minutes or so and set an alarm as to not to miss any meetings, calls or appointments. If you have another child at home, try to nap while she rests.

Comfort is also one of the first things you'll miss in early pregnancy. Your sore and tender breasts are preventing your favorite snooze position. Make sure to have adequate pillows and start practicing sleeping on your left side — the sooner you accomplish this, the more good nights of sleep to come. If this means switching sides of the bed, it is only temporary, and well worth the move.

Sleep challenges during the second trimester

Congrats! You are now well on your way, but sleeping is still an issue. It's now time for the body pillow. There are dozens of types of maternity pillows and luckily, most aren't very expensive. From the wedge, to the c-shaped, to the straight body-length pillow, you'll find one that suits your needs. Jump online or pop into Bed Bath and Beyond, Target, Babies 'R' Us or even Sears. Happily, many stores carry this magical wonder.

Sleep challenges during the third trimester

You are in the final stretch, and it really does feel like a marathon it is getting harder and harder the further you go. For women due in the hot summer months, try showering before bed. You can also get your hair wet or soak your feet in cold water to cool off. Light exercise such as walking, swimming or yoga can help you relax during the afternoon and get you ready for bedtime. Many expectant moms in their seventh, eighth and ninth months keep a change of clothes next to the bed, in case they sweat through a top or want to change from shorts to comfy pants during the night.

Sleep tidbits to keep in mind

  1. There is no harm done if you do fall asleep on your back or right side because your body will wake you up to change positions.
  2. Sleeping on your left side improves the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta and aids your kidneys in eliminating fluids that can cause swelling in your hands, feet and ankles.
  3. Avoid constantly sleeping on your back in the latter part of pregnancy as this puts weight on your spine, intestines and back muscles putting you at risk for backaches, hemorrhoids, indigestion, poor circulation and even impaired breathing.
