What is a lotus birth?

You want your baby's grand entrance into the world to be smooth and stress free, but is opting to cut the cord doing more harm than good? The practice of leaving the cord and placenta attached after birth is gaining popularity with parents looking for a gentler approach to childbirth, but extended-delayed cord severance may not be the best choice for those with a delicate constitution. So before you decide whether or not umbilical nonseverance is for you, find out: What is a lotus birth?

Lotus birth basics

The practice of extended-delayed cord severance, or rather, leaving the cord and placenta attached to your newborn after birth, is coined a lotus birth. Without clamping or cutting the cord, the lifelines are cared for and dry up naturally, while kept close to your baby until it falls off over time. Some parents opt to wrap the cord in a silk ribbon up to the baby's belly and gently wrap the placenta in a cloth or bag until it dries and detaches from your pride and joy, often between three to 10 days postpartum. However, the cord dries substantially within hours after birth, clamping itself naturally.

Find out: why are home births on the rise? >>

Benefits of a lotus birth

Although spirituality can be cited as the greatest purposes of umbilical nonseverance and leaving the placenta attached to your youngster, many argue that dodging cord-cutting actually puts less stress on your brand new baby. It is also argued that more blood cells are transferred to your baby postpartum that would otherwise be lost when the connection is severed right after birth.

"Parents are more tuned into the baby, focusing on the baby, placenta and mother as a whole unit."

However, the benefits aren't always medical. "Our seventh child was our first experience with lotus birth," shares Paula Freesoulbeing, Mothercultureone.com. "We were amazed to see such a connection between our son and his placenta. The experience enriched the babymoon period, bringing about within each family member, a deeper appreciation for the essence of nature itself."

And, Mary Ceallaigh, certified yoga teacher and birth consultant, Lotus Fertility, agrees. "One of the biggest benefits I've noticed attending and consulting on lotus births is during the postpartum experience. Parents are more tuned into the baby, focusing on the baby, placenta and mother as a whole unit. And, the presence of the placenta prompts postpartum moms to rest more, leading to a greater attachment and connection between parents and their newborn."

Care of the placenta

According to LotusFertility.com, as soon as it is delivered, the placenta is kept at the same level as your newborn to aid in the transfusion of blood and hormones to your little one. During the first hours of bonding, the placenta is wrapped in a soft cloth near you and your newborn. Ultimately, the placenta is placed in a special bowl or wrapped in a special cloth or bag after it is rinsed and preserved with herbs and sea salt to aid in drying and to minimize odor. Then, the placenta is kept close to you and your baby and cared for daily until it dries and detaches from your baby. Just remember to let the air do its job and avoid covering it with plastic.

Once you understand what a lotus birth entails, it's important to note that your bundle of joy has to be free of any potential infections, cord ruptures or damage to the placenta to avoid cutting the cord. However, for mommy-to-bes who appreciate the benefits of leaving the cord attached after birth but are worried about the placenta taking center stage during the first days of your newborn's life, you may want to consider delayed cord clamping — you still gain the important benefits of the first hours of a lotus birth and still focus all of your energy on bonding with your brand new baby.

Back-to-back babies: 7 Ways to make life easier

$

Having babies one right after the other can be quite the experience! Writer Margarette Burnette, whose babies were born about a year apart, shares some tips to help moms who have one baby and one on the way through this crazy time.

A few months after the birth of our child, my husband and I went on our first date night. Nine months later we welcomed the arrival of our second child. After a blur of diaper changes, feedings and non-stop cleaning, I have to admit that being the mom of "two under 2" is tough. However, I have also found that there are some simple ways to make life easier.

For moms who have a baby at home and a baby on the way, here are seven survival tips from healthcare experts and other mothers.

Write your routine

Write out your schedule for a typical day, and try to follow it. Valerie Akong, RN, a labor and delivery nurse and mother of two, knows from professional and personal experience that this is necessary.

A large number of the moms she sees have other children under age 3, and her advice to them is always the same. "You don't make time, you use your time wisely," she says. Keeping a routine allows moms to work smarter, not harder. It can be intimidating to wake up in the morning and know that the day is already planned with a full set of activities, but many mothers agree that this is the best way to make sure they actually schedule some relaxation time for themselves.

"The biggest piece of advice I can give to moms of back-to-back kids is to carve out mom time during the day," says Dr. Stephanie Hassel, an Atlanta-based pediatrician. "The most realistic way to do that is during a child's naptime." Of course, back-to-back babies don't always sleep at the same time, but this does not have to be an obstacle.

"The other child is more than welcome to have quiet time or independent play time," says Dr. Hassel. This is actually beneficial because he or she can learn self-soothing behaviors.

Minimize time out

Try to limit time spent shopping to once every few weeks. Elaine Quainter has four children, ages 4 months to 4 years. When she goes to the grocery store, she knows she needs to stock up for a while. "I try to run errands only twice a month," she says. In order to do this, she keeps an ongoing shopping list. Quainter also suggests that moms try to complete tasks during the day, when older children are in school.

When she must bring the entire family on trips, she frequents child-friendly stores. "I don't go anywhere that doesn't have a cart," she says. She places her infant's car seat inside the shopping cart, while her toddler sits in the front section. Her older children often want to explore their surroundings. To keep them close by, she encourages her 4-year-old twins to "help" her push the shopping cart. "That way I can make sure they stay near me."

Another way to limit shopping trips is to enlist the help of relatives and friends. "Don't take on more than you can bear," cautions Angela Guzman, a mother of five. "I've had a lot of support from my family." Letting others run errands for you is also a good way to accept help from friends or family members who are not comfortable babysitting.

Don't talk to strangers

Learn to overlook perfect strangers who make not-so-perfect remarks. It is impossible to ignore everyone all the time, of course. Just be aware that when you have small children with you, people you don't know sometimes make careless comments.

This always seems to happen to me at the supermarket when one child starts crying and the other one decides to throw his food on the ground. I have heard everything from amazement to pity .

Quainter rarely goes out in public with her four children without hearing something similar. Her advice is not to dwell on what anyone says. Sometimes she will even initiate a conversation with a quick, lighthearted remark. Many moms suggest having a common reply prepared. "I will enjoy them while I can" or "they tell me it will get easy in a few years" are my favorites.

Keep a "clothes" mind

Organize children's clothes by size and season, and make sure they are easy to access. Moms of back-to-back babies will find that they are unpacking and repacking infant and toddler attire every few months, since children outgrow clothes quickly at these ages. Constantly organizing little shirts, pants, or dresses can be overwhelming if there is no simple system in place.

"Constantly organizing little shirts, pants, or dresses can be overwhelming if there is no simple system in place."

When I was pregnant with my first child, I received some outfits that were too large, so I put them in storage. The problem with that strategy is that by the time he was ready to wear the clothes, I had forgotten about them. I didn't unpack the outfits until the next year, when he had moved on to a larger size. When my second son came along, I got smart and reorganized the children's closet.

I keep their current clothes in convenient dresser drawers, but I no longer store out of season and off-size items in a garage or attic. Instead, I keep them in clear, medium-size plastic bins that are placed neatly inside the nursery closet. These containers are usually found wherever home organization solutions are sold. I label them by size and season: 0-3 Months Summer, 0-3 Months Winter, 4-6 Months Summer, etc.

Now, when a child outgrows his clothes, or the weather changes, his appropriate outfits are always in easy reach. Akong says another "clothes" minded idea is to wash each child's belongings separately. This makes it much easier to sort and fold different sizes of outfits for everyday use. Guzman advises moms to prepare the next day's clothes for everyone each night before going to bed.

Though it is important to have a "clothes" mind when storing outfits, try to keep an "open" mind when it comes to accepting secondhand items from others. Once you have a packing and storage system in place, it's easy to accept presents and store them for future use. I estimate that I saved more than $1,000 in the year after my first son was born just because I accepted clothes from friends and relatives.

Fit in fitness

Do simple exercises, like walking, while your children are with you. After delivering back-to-back babies, moms' bodies need a fitness routine more than ever. Yet with little children, complex fitness routines are harder than ever to keep. Walking with your little ones is an easy, excellent way to bond with them while getting back into shape.

If the weather permits, try to squeeze in at least 15 to 30 minutes of walking during the course of a normal day. Until my younger son was able to sit up, I wore him in a baby sling while I pushed my toddler in a single stroller. For older babies and toddlers, consider investing in a double stroller.

During bad weather, you may need to plan to do a stationary exercise while the children are sleeping. Guzman likes to work out early in the morning, before her children wake up and before she gets distracted with the tasks of the day. In addition, she warns moms not to forget to take care of the general nutrition of their bodies, including taking supplements when necessary, and not eating a lot of junk food.

Show siblings how to help

Encourage brothers and sisters to bond with the new baby by giving the older child a role in caring for the younger one. Akong suggests having moms introduce older children to their new sibling by using phrases such as "let's look at our baby" and "we're going to have fun taking care of our baby."

She also suggests letting the older child spend time in mom's lap, while a trusted caregiver holds the infant nearby. This lets big brother or sister know that the baby is being added into the family, but is not replacing them. When the new addition comes home, let siblings help by handing you a diaper, a storybook, or by playing the quiet game so the baby can go to sleep.

Review birth control options, if you choose to use it

Because pregnancy surprises can happen when mothers have to deal with everything from irregular daily schedules to irregular menstrual periods, make sure you know common birth control choices for moms if you aren't quite ready to add another baby to the bunch.

Here are some popular preferences:

Hormone methods: The Pill, Mini Pill, and Depo-Provera are options that contain hormones. The Pill is taken daily and contains estrogen and progestin. Because estrogen can interfere with breast milk production, it is recommended that mothers use the Pill only if their babies are bottlefed. The Mini Pill and Depo-Provera contain progesterone only and are generally safe for breastfeeding mothers. Depo-Provera is administered as a shot that is given about once every three months. All hormone methods are prescribed by a healthcare provider and are generally available after the six-week postpartum checkup.

Barrier methods: Diaphragms, condoms, and the use of spermicide are also common choices that do not use hormones, so they do not affect breast milk. Diaphragms are prescribed and fitted by a healthcare provider, while the other methods are available over the counter.

Regardless of the method you choose, it's best to check with your doctor before making a decision.

The baby girl name Nevaeh, which is heaven spelled backwards, is actually ranked number 35 on the Social Security Administration’ s list of the top 100 baby names of the year. Jessica Alba gave both her daughters the spiritual names Honor and Haven, as did Gwyneth Paltrow who named her son Moses. Many parents of siblings or twins are opting to give all their children spiritual names.

Doula or don’t?

If you’re planning on a drug-free labor, you may benefit from the assistance of a professional birth coach. Examine your birth plan and find out if a doula is right for you and your birth partner, or if you’re better off flying solo.

Is a birth coach right for you?

If you’re planning on a drug-free labor, you may benefit from the assistance of a professional birth coach.

Examine your birth plan and find out if a doula is right for you and your birth partner, or if you’re better off flying solo.

Natural childbirth is a polarizing topic, and all the arguing can get in the way of celebrating birth in every form. Whether you’re gung-ho for an epidural or determined to try an unmedicated labor, a doula can help you achieve a better birth experience. A doula is a woman trained specifically to provide support during birth. Find out if a doula is right for your birth plan.

Feeling anxious about childbirth?

Even moms who have already experienced labor can feel nervous about an upcoming birth. Doulas train extensively to assist with childbirth. They provide a service that supports a woman’s emotional and physical state during labor. Even if you’re planning on or allowing for the possibility of having a medicated birth, a doula can support you and your partner and help advocate for you during the process. A doula attends your entire labor, often at home as well as at the hospital or birthing center. She arrives with tools like music, massage and aromatherapy and will support both you and your birthing partner. Doulas meet with you during pregnancy to help you plan your birth and to talk to you about support methods. This can help with anxiety over childbirth.

Do you want a natural birth?

A doula does not perform the duties of a midwife or obstetrician. Instead, she focuses solely on the experience of the laboring mother. This careful attention helps moms trust the birth process. Bradley Method Instructor Laura Irmis, AAHCC, recalls her experience with a doula. “Doulas are more about emotional support," Irmis says. "The physical support is just a bonus. I love doulas and feel our society needs them to help build confidence in women's bodies and to simply trust birth." If you’re curious about natural childbirth but you’re nervous about it too, a doula can gently guide you and help you with birthing techniques and positions that can make natural childbirth a positive experience for you and your birth partner.

Are you intimidated by medical professionals?

Hospitals trigger anxiety and tension in many patients. Laboring mothers are no exception. It’s common to be intimidated by doctors and nurses during the labor process, no matter how gentle or understanding they’re being. A doula can help act as a liaison between you and your doctor. In the thick of it, this kind of insight can be crucial, especially when it comes to knowing your rights as a patient. A doula may also encourage techniques such as sitting on a ball or taking a hot shower that a labor and delivery staff member may be too busy to help you with.

Is a doula right for you?

"When you’re meeting with your potential doulas, pay attention to how you feel."

As wonderful as a doula’s assistance can be, it’s not for everyone. The best way to evaluate whether or not a doula is right for you is to meet with doulas in your area. Try searching with DONA International to find a certified doula in your area. Meet with plenty of questions in mind and take notes. When you’re meeting with your potential doulas, pay attention to how you feel. Are you comfortable? Do your personalities mesh? Remember that you may spend a great deal of time with your doula. You’ll be in an emotionally and physically vulnerable state. Your doula should make you feel strong and at peace, not intimidated or uncomfortable. After meeting with doulas, you’ll have a better sense of whether or not this is the right path for your upcoming birth.

Can you afford to have a baby in this economy? There's always a reason to put it off: You're too young, you're too new at your job, your career is just taking off, you just got married... The list can go on and on. But is having a baby in a recession too risky?

Having a baby in tough times

Can you afford to have a baby in this economy?

There's always a reason to put off having a baby: You're too young, you're too new at your job, your career is just taking off, you just got married... The list can go on and on. But is having a baby in a recession too risky?

Is it wrong to have a baby when the country is in such dire financial straits? Parents of adult children are facing layoffs, losing their homes and struggling to put younger children through school. Meanwhile, newlyweds are facing similar financial issues and wondering if the baby fever will have to wait.

So, can you afford it? Ann Douglas, author of The Mother of All Pregnancy Books, says that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to family planning. "Still... some times are definitely better than others," Douglas said in her Pregnancy and Baby column. Douglas says that partners should consider finances, feelings and the state of the relationship before trying for a baby.

Finances of pregnancy and baby rearing

Any way you look at it, there are costs associated with having a baby. Some to consider are:

  • Prenatal care
  • Birth costs
  • Maternity clothes
  • Baby clothes
  • Diapers
  • Crib

There is also the potential cost of a breast pump or bottles and formula . Even if you breastfeed and cloth diaper, having a baby will mean spending money on some necessities.

Laid off and delayed

The financial storm that hit the country a few years ago has affected more than bank accounts: It's left couples struggling, sometimes with both partners jobless or underemployed. That's the case for Deanna Miller and her husband who both lost their jobs within months of each other. "I was laid off April 1. He had lost his job back in December but had some job leads. We figured he'd probably have a job once the baby were to arrive. Besides, I had the bigger salary, so he could always become a stay-at-home dad if he didn't have a job," says Deanna.

The couple decided to wait until their financial picture is more stable before trying for a baby. "When I lost my job, not only did we not even consider trying to get pregnant, I secretly rejoiced every time I got my period. We know that it's only June, so we're hopeful that our plans to get pregnant this year still happen, but it will just be later than we thought," says Deanna.

A ticking clock

Motherhood used to be what the young women did, or that's how it seemed. But these days, things are different. Women give birth well into their 40s; however, the women who put off maternity get a double dose of stress when it comes to conception: A ticking biological clock and potentially a financial time bomb.

However, that doesn't mean that having another baby is a no-go.

Heidi Eklund says that, ultimately, if her child has to go without things like video games, it's not a big deal. "I am a 40-year-old voiceover actress who finally found myself in a relationship where my partner wanted to have a child with me. Then, the economy went south. We are struggling financially, but I don't have time to wait — so we are trying. Plenty of children are born into struggling homes. My parents struggled, and their parents struggled. I grew up appreciating things when we had them, and I managed to do a lot of wonderful things in my life even though we didn't have extra money," says Heidi.

Going for it

Other couples aren't factoring finances into their decisions as much. Many couples who've skirted the jobless situation are going ahead with baby plans. "I am now 5 months along, due in mid-October. I have to say, it was a decision my husband and I made with little regard to the economy, and I think that's because we are both doing well in our careers with no real signs that economy will affect [us] anytime soon. I am 28, and my husband is 30, so we figured this was the perfect time to grow our family," says LaNesha Gipson. Gipson says that, despite the economy, she is considering opening her own business to work at home and care for her child.

As Cecille Hansen's mother told her, "If people waited until they felt they could really afford children, the species would have died out."

How co-sleeping can save your baby's life

We've all heard about the dangers of co-sleeping, yet research shows sleeping near your baby can reduce the risk of SIDS and has benefits for both of you.

We've all heard about the dangers of co-sleeping, yet research shows sleeping near your baby can reduce the risk of SIDS and has benefits for both of you.

Benefits of sleeping near your baby

Instead of decorating a nursery, many parents choose to co-sleep with their babies.

Co-sleeping may be done for convenience, bonding or to make nighttime breastfeeding easier, but it can also reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Sudden Unexplained Infant Death .

"The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies sleep in their parents' room for the first six months of life to prevent the occurrence of SIDS," says Dr. Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, a health psychologist and international board certified lactation consultant.

Co-sleeping options

One mom who trusted her instinct

When Moorea Mallat's infant daughter was diagnosed with two types of sleep apnea, she not only co-slept but also bed shared to help regulate her breathing. She explains, "Whenever I sensed that my daughter had stopped breathing, I was right there to rouse her or breathe on her. When we were concerned about our baby's sleep, the first thing the doctor told us was to watch her chest carefully and check the lips and face for a bluish tinge. I could not do that from another room."

According to The Safe to Sleep campaign, if you bring your baby into your bed for breastfeeding, you should return him to his crib or bassinet when done feeding — room sharing is recommended but bed sharing is not.

However, many parents bed share since it feels right for them and their babies — in many countries bed sharing is the norm, and when the tragedy of SIDS or SUID occurs, it usually also involves other risk factors like smoking, alcohol use or putting Baby in a tummy-down position instead of his back for sleeping.

Meet the co-sleeping bed-sharing family>>

Breastfeeding — an extra safety precaution

You don't need to breastfeed to co-sleep with your baby, but breastfeeding provides additional benefits when it comes to reducing SIDS and SUID.

Kendall-Tackett explains, "Being near Mom at night increases breastfeeding rates overall — but there's more. When babies are near their mothers at night, they are more likely to breastfeed exclusively. Exclusive breastfeeding increases infant survival rates. This effect is so striking that even the SIDS researchers are now saying that advice about infant sleep location must not compromise breastfeeding."

Safe co-sleeping

Whether you room share, bed share or a combination of both, be sure to put your baby to sleep on his or her back on a firm surface. Keep anything soft, like blankets or stuffed animals out of your baby's crib or bassinet. If you bring your baby to bed with you, even just for feeding, make sure comforters and pillows are out of Baby's way.

Read tips for safe co-sleeping >>

Bottom Line

Whether you decide to room share, bed share or a combination of the two, sleeping near your baby may save her life.

Timeline: How to prepare your body for pregnancy

$

Deciding to have a baby can be one of the most exciting times in your life — you may even get sidetracked with anticipation. But when it comes to conceiving, it’s important you remember to prepare your body for pregnancy. Here’s a brief timeline on what you should be doing pre-conception and when.

Woman beginning fitness routine

Three months before conception

Visit your doctor

The healthier you are, the easier conceiving will be. Not only that, your body will better be able to handle pregnancy. So visit your doctor for a full physical to ensure your blood pressure levels are in check — even some basic bloodwork will come in handy to make sure that everything is functioning properly. If they're not, alter your lifestyle habits accordingly — your doctor can tell you what you need to do.

Go off birth control

Most doctors say it takes about three months for your body to return to a normal cycle — whereby you can track ovulation — after being on birth control. Once your cycle seems normal, you can then talk to your doctor about tracking ovulation with an ovulation test or charting your daily temps.

Stop drinking or smoking

Both of these vices will adversely affect your health, your baby's health and the likelihood that you'll be able to conceive. If you want a child, it's best to start the quitting process now so there's no chance you'll be doing either one once fertilization happens.

Two months before conception

Start a regular exercise regimen

If you don't already work out on a regular basis, now is the time to start. Not only will exercise help reduce the amount of cortisol in your body, it will also help you cope with any conception issues you may encounter. On top of that, it will help boost your muscle and cardiovascular strength — you'll need both to carry the extra weight of a baby.

Change your diet

Getting your daily dose of nutrients and vitamins is not only essential for your health, but it's super important for your baby's. Research says it takes 30 days for something to become habit, so if you need to alter your eating patterns — digging into more vegetables or going organic — now would be the time to change things up.

One month before conception

Start popping folic acid pills

Folic acid is essential if you're trying to get pregnant. Not only does it protect the female reproductive system, it will stave off neural tube defects . Talk to your doctor about how much folic acid you will need to take on a daily basis and get suggestions on the kind of multivitamin/folic acid pills you should purchase.
