a special military cause

Mom and actress Christie Lynn Smith looked stunning last month as she celebrated her soon-to-be son with friends and family. The baby shower, thrown for Smith and her husband actor John Fortson, benefited a great cause — Celebrate the Military Child.

Christie Lynn Smith and her husband, actor John Fortson, live a truly normal life among glittery stars and over-the-top glam in Hollywood. The couple, parents to 4-year-old Abby Ryder, is expecting their second child on January 3, and their celebration of that baby was very much in line with the way they live their lives.

The couple is very excited to welcome a boy to their family. "When we saw the ultrasound and the doctor said, 'It’s a boy,' I think I was a little taken aback in the moment since all I knew was taking care of a little girl," Smith told SheKnows. "But that fear passed a day later and I’m absolutely thrilled!"

"I was very excited to find out it was a boy. I was going to be happy either way as I love our daughter Abby so much and have such a great time with her, but I thought it would be fun in this life to experience the differences in raising a boy and a girl," Dad-to-be Fortson shared. "And then I keep having visions of us surfing together, camping, playing basketball, having fun as he grows up and it makes me smile. Abby and I will do these things as well, but mentoring a little boy who you see yourself in is special in its own way."

Wild adventures in parenthood

Christie Lynn Smith baby shower invitation

On October 21, they celebrated Abby's soon-to-be baby brother at a fantastic baby shower that was thrown for an important cause that holds a special place in the expecting couple's hearts. Styled by Made by a Princess, the Wild Adventures-themed baby shower was catered by the Artisan Cheese Gallery with cupcakes from Heavenly Layers.

"I loved every part [of the shower]!" Smith told us. "It was beautiful and lovely. I think one of my favorite parts was seeing some friends I haven’t seen in a while."

The celebration was traditional with a twist — with a sippy cup drinking game and a game requiring guests to guess the gestation of baby animals. They even wrote well wishes to the baby boy-to-be.

"I think one of the funniest parts was when the guys had a sippy cup drinking contest. The dad who won gulped his down and threw down the sippy cup in victory — very funny!" Smith added.

A cause close to their hearts

Christie Lynn Smith and John Fortson are both military children themselves. Fortson told us that growing up in a military family is "filled with ups and downs and sacrifices. I grew up traveling the world, living in Japan for three years and all over the United States."

The couple's baby shower benefited a charity near and dear to their hearts, Celebrate the Military Child. The organization was founded in memory of SFC Jared C. Monti, the first Medal of Honor Recipient in Operation Enduring Freedom and exists to throw parties for children of military service members.

A speech by Faith Vera, co-founder of Celebrate the Military Child, thanking the sponsors, vendors and guests, brought tears to Christie Lynn’s eyes as well as those of the guests. Followed by a thank you speech from John Fortson to family and friends, everyone was both moved and happy to be part of something so special.

"One of the most special parts was when Faith talked about Celebrate the Military Child and losing her best friend in Afghanistan and how the shower was benefiting the families who serve our country," Smith said.

"Then my husband thanked everyone for coming and by that time I was so emotional I couldn’t even talk! My throat closed up — you know that feeling when you can’t say anything because you are just overwhelmed... that was me."

A little Hollywood flare

Christie Lynn Smith's baby shower

One element of the shower was true to Hollywood. Some amazing companies showed up — not only to share their great products with the family, but also to donate to Celebrate the Military Child. Gold Hoof sponsors Packaways.com and Daddy Scrubs sponsored the event, which was hosted by family friend Faith Vera. Some of the souvenirs from Silver and Bronze Hoof Sponsors had the mom-and-dad-to-be galloping away with a Britax Boulevard 70-G3Joovy Zoom 360Stokke Tripp Trapp and a Summer Infant Peek Plus Monitor.

The family also trotted away with gifts from Bronze Hoof Sponsors Bebe au Lait, Button, Cover My Heart, Cuski, Happy Heinys, Hevea Baby USA, Push Pack, LollaCup, Sophie the Giraffe and Snooze Shade.

Smith and Fortson had a very special thank you to the sponsors: "We would like to tell them how much we appreciate their generosity and giving hearts in helping Celebrate the Military Child. People like you are so special and help make the world a better place through supporting such great causes. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts."

The celebrity couple’s adult guests enjoyed gifts from NYR Organic and their smallest guests scored cute bags with a DVD from Lakeshore Learning. Little Ms. Abby Ryder was smitten with her personalized blanket from Button.

Family dreams

Christie Lynn Smith and John Fortson baby shower

Soon-to-be big sister Abby is looking forward to her new role. "I think she’s very excited about her baby brother’s arrival," Smith said. "She’s always kissing my belly, singing and talking to him... It’s very sweet."

When Smith asked Abby how she felt, the sweet 4-year-old said, "Really good and I’m so excited to have a baby brother. I love that he is gonna be a super strong baby." Be still our hearts!

I asked the couple about their dreams as a family of four and they were caught off guard. "Wow! Family of four! We never thought of it like that. How very exciting!" Fortson said. "It will be fun for the four of us to share time, projects and travel together. It will be fun to see the dynamics and gifts of each of us rise to the surface as we watch our children grow."

Smith said that she's looking forward to sharing the couple's love with both of their children and watching them grow up. "It's still crazy to believe there is a little person growing inside of me. We are beyond thrilled."

The new baby's name

I couldn't resist asking the always-pressing question for any mama-to-be: What are you naming the little guy?! Unfortunately, we'll have to wait. "We do have a name," Smith told me. "But just in case we change it when we meet him, I’d rather tell you after he’s born."

So check back in early January to meet the newest member of the Smith-Fortson family and to learn his name!

Tori Spelling reveals Finn’s vintage giraffe-themed nursery

Tori Spelling shared with us Finn's giraffe-themed baby nursery that perfectly blends "vintage touches and modern regency." With the help of her good friends The Guncles, find out the personalized touches Tori and Dean added to their son's room, from the chic wallpaper to the DIY decor and the "Finn" chair from Anthropologie.

Tori Spelling - Finn's nursery

Tori Spelling’s fourth pregnancy required her to be on bedrest for several months due to a condition called placenta previa, a condition that can cause internal bleeding and can be dangerous to both Mom and the baby. The 39-year-old actress and interior designer couldn't wait to get to work on her son’s baby nursery— but she needed some help!

She enlisted the help of her longtime friends, Bill Horn and Scout Masterson of Marque Communications to help her design Finn’s baby nursery, which she orchestrated all from her LA-area hospital bed!

"Every item in the room should have a story or meaning."

The baby nursery needed to be completed quickly because of the possibility that Tori would deliver early, however Bill and Scout also had to keep her condition under wraps.

“We were thrilled when Tori asked us to help her decorate Finn’s nursery. When we started the project we didn’t know that Finn's journey into this world would be such a dangerous and emotional one,“ the Guncles said.

Luckily, Bill and Scout knew how to create the perfect space for baby Finn.

“We loved collaborating with Tori on Finn’s nursery because she has a similar design philosophy — every item in the room should have a story or meaning,” Bill and Scout told SheKnows. “The chair is named ’Finn’, the mobile was handmade, the wallpaper is the same print we used in her hospital room. She doesn’t do ’cookie cutter’ design or open up a catalog, point to something and say ’I’d like that.’“

Tori Spelling - Finn's nurseryThe conception of Finn’s nursery

“In the early stages of my pregnancy I was shopping at a flea market and found an adorable vintage giraffe figurine,” Tori said. “That was when I came up for the vision of Finn’s nursery. I wanted to do a blend of vintage touches and modern regency.”

“Dean and I have always known since Stella was born that we would have another baby boy one day and we would name him Finn,” she continued.

“Although we didn't find out the sex of the baby, I committed whole-heartedly to a baby boy giraffe nursery for Finn. That very first vintage giraffe figurine I found also stayed on my bedside table in my hospital room for the 2-1/2 months I was there. It gave me hope.”

The bold color choices

“I wanted his nursery to be bright and bold pop colors so I went with turquoise and orange. Then to add the vintage touch I added in a retro yellow,” said Tori.

Tori Spelling - Finn's nursery

The wallpaper in Finn’s nursery is temporary, self-adhesive “peel-and-stick” in a Marrakesh Honey Jade design from Tempaper. This is the same print that the Guncles hung in her hospital room for her long stay.

"The idea of chic yet temporary wallpaper is genius!"

“The idea of chic yet temporary wallpaper is genius!” said Tori. “When I learned that I would potentially be spending my entire pregnancy in a hospital room I wanted to decorate to make it feel like home and to give myself a DIY project. Nothing permanent can be on the hospital walls so the Guncles found Tempaper. Dean hung it and every day that wallpaper made me happy. It was a bright spot for me during tough times. I knew it had to be a part of Finn’s nursery as it had been such a huge part of our journey together. Plus I wanted him to finally get to see it and love it as much as I had.”

Tori Spelling - Finn's nurseryThe baby furniture

Tori and Dean picked the ducduc Regency crib and Savannah changer, which were custom finished and shipped to them from the East Coast.

“I'm obsessed with the crib and changer by ducduc,” said Tori. “I had never seen anything like their designs. Their pieces exude style and glamour. And I knew the Regency crib would be the perfect pinnacle of Finn's nursery.”

The orange SPI “Beckett” baby dresser is the one that that sits in Hattie’s nursery — except hers is in pink, of course.

“I love their dressers. They are so chic and the orange gives that amazing color pop in the room,” she said. She found the two antique mirrors hanging above the dresser on her own site from her own LA-area home decor and gift boutique, InvenTORI.

She also used the Nook Sleep Systems“Pebble” mattress and matching custom orange change pad. “Gorgeous and so cozy for Baby,” Tori said. “Finn loves it.”

The chair is from Anthropologie – and Tori knew it was perfect as soon as she saw it. “When I saw this chair online from my hospital bed and it fit the decor, was the perfect yellow for the nursery, and was named ‘Finn’, I knew it was a sign.”

Tori Spelling - Finn's nursery

DIY decor

Tori loves DIY decor that adds her own personal style and meaningful touches to the room. She revealed that the orange area rug was actually vintage placements she found at an estate sale and she made into a rug.

“The macrame mobile with hanging paper mâché giraffes was made with a friend who taught me how to macrame,” said Tori. “I love making things for a room. Makes it so personal.”

She also got the siblings in on the fun!

“Finn's yellow bookshelf was an old chipped red $5 bookshelf I found at a yard sale. Liam and Stella and I sanded it and painted it yellow to match Finn's chair. The kids loved making something for the new baby's room.”

Tori Spelling - Finn's nurseryFinishing touches

Tori said the 4moms mamaRoo baby swing is at the top of her list of must-haves. “The mamaRoo has been a constant in my babies’ lives. Hattie loved hers and now Finn adores his. It's so soothing for Baby. A must-have.”

She found the vintage giraffe lamps sitting on the dresser online, had custom-made curtains and pillows from fabric she found from Rikshaw Design and added in the large letter “F” that hangs on the wall next to the crib from Fab.com. The orange Ubbi diaper pail is both functional and fun.

The 5-foot-tall stuffed giraffe was a gift from Bill and Scout to Finn on the day he was born. “We hope that the room’s decor is a chic and calming space for our little nephew, and a reminder to Tori and Dean of what an amazing gift little Finn is,” Bill and Scout said.

History of the pregnancy test: A tale of two lines

$
0
0
Oh, that longed-for answer — the news that a little one will be joining your family. How did someone come up with pregnancy tests, anyway? Read on for some interesting info on the history of pregnancy tests.

That glorious moment of peeing on a stick and getting the answer you crave. A positive. Two lines. Or in some cases, a plus sign or a digital “yes” or “pregnant.” Have you ever wondered how anyone got the brilliant idea of an in-home laboratory test?

Long, long ago

The first recorded pregnancy tests were discovered in ancient Egyptian texts dating back to 1350 BCE. A woman who suspected pregnancy was to water seeds of barley and wheat over a week or so. The text states, “If the barley grows, it means a male child. If the wheat grows, it means a female child. If both do not grow, she will not bear at all.” They may have been on to something — later testing revealed that 70 percent of the time, a pregnant mom’s pee will show growth, whereas the urine of a non-pregnant woman would not.

Hormones and bunnies

In the 1890s, scientists were describing certain “secretions” within the body that they felt were crucial to our inner workings — later to be known as hormones. In the 20s, scientists in several countries were independently observing that when the urine of pregnant women was injected into immature mice, rabbits, frogs and toads, it would create changes in the animals’ ovaries . Thus began the phrase “the rabbit test” — the rabbit was euthanized and dissected to determine pregnancy, because the hCG present in a pregnant woman’s urine induced ovulation in these critters.

It gets more complicated

In the 1960s, there was even more research done and a “hemagglutination inhibition test” was developed. This sounds terribly complicated, and it was — it was a lab test that used purified hCG that was mixed with a urine sample along with antibodies directed against hCG. If a woman was pregnant, the red cells clumped together in a particular pattern.

And then more simple

e.p.t ad - 1978

Pregnancy testing became easier for users in the 70s, with a test that would display results in as little as two hours, and would even work as early as four days after a missed period. Yes, it was still required to be run in a laboratory by a trained technician, but things were approaching home use faster than ever before.

The first pregnancy test marketed in the United States for home use was e.p.t. — a brand that is widely known and still used today. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the e.p.t. home pregnancy test — it was introduced in 1977 and had quite a number of ingredients in each package. An advertisement that ran in Mademoiselle that year reported that it included “pre-measured ingredients consisting of a vial of purified water, a test tube containing, among other things, sheep red blood cells… as well as a medicine dropper and clear plastic support for the test tube, with an angled mirror at the bottom.”

Bringing this laboratory test into the privacy of the home allowed women to learn sooner, and in the privacy of their own home, the potentially life-changing news that she was expecting. It also helped her make changes earlier, if needed, to her lifestyle — such as improving her diet or quitting smoking.

Today

e.p.t. home pregnancy test

Today’s pregnancy tests have advanced leaps and bounds from this early home pregnancy test — and e.p.t. continues to offer home pregnancy tests, but with nothing to mix, no two-hour wait and no high price tag. You can get simple and accurate pregnancy tests for as little as one dollar on some brands, and you can get even cheaper tests over the internet. They can often detect pregnancy several days before a missed period, and only take minutes to tell us the answer.

The first digital tests appeared in 2003 and we can only imagine how much easier, cheaper and faster pregnancy tests will be when our children are having babies.

Navel piercing and pregnant bellies

If you have your navel pierced and get a positive pregnancy test, you may wonder what the heck to do now. We talk with moms who have "been there, done that" as well as professionals in the body piercing community about when it's best to remove the jewelry, if at all.

When to take the jewelry out

If you have your navel pierced and get a positive pregnancy test, you may wonder what the heck to do now.

We talk with moms who have "been there, done that" as well as professionals in the body piercing community about when it's best to remove the jewelry, if at all.

Your navel piercing has healed well, but now that you’re expecting a baby, the question pops up — when do you remove the jewelry, or do you need to at all?

Potential issues

If your piercing is a new one, you run the risk of the jewelry rejecting if you’re pregnant, simply because your body is trying to heal a piercing and grow a baby at the same time. Rejection happens because your body recognizes that your new jewelry is foreign and, as it would a splinter, it seeks to rid itself of it. And navel piercings can take up to 12 months to heal, so keep that in mind as you consider your options.

As your belly grows, migration is another issue that can crop up. Your uterus will, by around 20 weeks, climb to the level of your navel, and continue its path upward and outward, putting pressure on your jewelry. Many, if not most, moms report that their belly button eventually pops outward by delivery day, so you can imagine the force behind your belly button as your baby grows bigger each week. This puts pressure on your jewelry, potentially causing it to gradually be pushed out of its original path and head on a new, crooked mission.

Body piercings a parent can be proud of>>

Took it out

A large percentage of the moms we spoke to decided to go ahead and remove their piercing. “I retired my navel piercing way before I needed to, at about 12 weeks,” shared Jackee, pregnant with her first child. “I knew its life was coming to an end and just wanted to get it over with, so I took it out as per my husband’s advice. He was a piercer for five years and had a very clear stance on it: ‘Take it out so it doesn't get a chance to get angry, and repierce it later on if you want.’ I'm really glad I took it out; now at eight months pregnant the scar tissue is red and usually angry and sore. Trying to save it would have been more trouble to me than it was worth.”

Find out how to stop stretch marks>>

Left it in

Some moms decided that since their piercings were totally healed, they’d take it one day at a time to see if they could leave it in. “I left mine in through my entire pregnancy, with the same jewelry,” explained Lexi, mom of one. “It never caused me any problems. I only had it removed about, oh, one minute before my emergency C-section because I was being put completely under anesthesia.”

The bottom line

The usual advice is to either go ahead and remove it, or monitor it closely if you decide to leave it in. Visit your body piercing professional if you notice any rejection, migration, redness, swelling or unusual discharge — and keep in mind, infection can happen even in a piercing where the jewelry has been removed.

November 17 is World Prematurity Day. One in eight babies born in the United States arrives early, sometimes for no known cause.

Learn how to prepare if your little one is born too soon, and how to get through your baby's subsequent hospital stay.

When I was expecting my first child and looked about to pop, I remember patting my burgeoning belly as I reassured my boss, “Oh, I have a feeling about this one. I think he’ll take his time.”

As I lay on the ultrasound table at 32.5 weeks’ pregnant, listing items I wanted my husband to fetch from home since I was about to be admitted to the hospital, I realized my preemie son, Charlie, was my new boss. Timing was entirely up to him, from that moment on.

Prematurity is defined as birth before 37 weeks’ gestation. In the United States, one in eight babies is born prematurely, according to the March of Dimes. Any number of conditions can cause premature birth, and as many as 40 percent of premature births have no known cause.

Meet Grant, 1 pound, 15 ounces

Jennifer was 23 weeks’ pregnant with her son, Grant, when her water broke without warning or known cause. She spent the next two weeks in the hospital. Grant arrived at 25.5 weeks, weighing 1 pound, 15 ounces. He was 13 inches long.

Over the next 96 days, Grant clung to life in the neonatal intensive care unit , while Jennifer and her husband, Greg, clung to what Greg describes as “the dream of bringing Grant home from the hospital, just like most normal parents get to experience.”

“We spent a lot of nights crying ourselves to sleep,” Greg says. Looking back, Jennifer believes “ignorance was bliss, and kept me from really understanding how grave the situation was.”

The couple did what they could to surround Grant with love, filling his isolette with pictures of themselves and recording children’s books for the nurses to play for Grant when neither parent could be there.

U.S. preterm births drop

Jennifer and Greg's story isn’t unique — and neither is their success. “Grant is super,” Greg reports. “Amazing and so smart!” Jennifer adds. At 7 years old, he shows no development issues.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the U.S. preterm birth rate peaked in 2006 at 12.8 percent, after rising steadily for more than two decades. It dropped to 11.7 percent in 2011, the lowest in a decade.

Prepare for preemie

Myra Wick, M.D., Ph.D., is a specialist in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Wick co-wrote Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy and is mom to four children.

In Dr. Wick’s experience, expectant mothers are surprised most often by complications that can arise from a premature birth, and the length of time the baby may need to remain in the hospital.

If you know your baby will arrive early, Dr. Wick advises touring the NICU and meeting with the neonatologists. “Ask questions,” she urges. “And don’t be afraid to ask more than once if there are lingering questions you don’t fully understand or don’t remember everything discussed.”

I was admitted on a Friday afternoon, and Charlie was born Tuesday morning. Over the weekend, my husband and I toured the NICU . I’ll never forget the compassionate NICU nurses and the neonatologist who sat by my bedside, patting my hand and reassuring me through my tearful fretting.

Surprising lessons

No warning?

What if your baby arrives early with no warning? The Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy recommends the following:

  • Spend time touching and talking to your newborn.
  • Learn as much as you can about your baby’s medical condition.
  • Take an active role in your baby’s care.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
  • Lean on someone.
  • Inquire if public health nurses or visiting nurses can assist with your baby’s care after you’re home.
  • Ask if your baby should be enrolled in special infant follow-up or infant development programs.

Over Charlie’s one-month stay in the NICU, we learned more than we ever wanted to know about Bradycardia, chest tubes, feeding tubes, kangaroo care and breastfeeding .

One of the most surprising lessons was how to touch our preemie. A mother’s first instinct is to caress her newborn child, but for a premature baby, that type of touch may provide too much stimulation. We learned that a gentle, steady touch was best.

We also learned that eye contact can provide too much stimulation for a preemie. It was strange to realize, but that tiny baby is taking so much in, that direct, prolonged eye contact can cause sensory overload.

It was difficult to look away, but I remember feeling an overwhelming calm as I kept my face expressionless and averted my gaze from Charlie’s tiny, blinking eyes. It was something I could do for him when otherwise I felt helpless.

World Prematurity Day

November 17 marks World Prematurity Day. The Prematurity Campaign was launched in 2003 by the March of Dimes, a nonprofit working to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The March of Dimes also funds research and advocates for legislation to improve care for mothers and babies.

In 2008, March of Dimes expanded its campaign globally, and this year the organization invites you to post on its Facebook page a story about a baby born early.

There’s a new trend in maternity wear. Instead of skin-tight, clingy apparel, pregnant gals are going with the flow — flowy maternity clothes, that is. Check out the latest in flattering, loose-fitting clothes that promise high style with comfort.

For her second pregnancy, Kourtney Kardashianbucked the super-tight Hollywood trend, opting instead for blousy tops, pleated shift dresses and gauzy pantsuits. Embrace the move toward less-constricting maternity wear and try some of these new, chic looks.

Pleated dress

At the Nokia Lumia 900 launch last September, Kourtney sported this fabulous orange pleated dress. With the brilliant color and simple design, this little number is perfect for brunch, dinner and every event in between.

Get Kourtney’s brilliant look with the Donna Morgan Long-Sleeve Pleated Maternity Dress . The bold sapphire blue is a gorgeous alternative to basic black. Wear it with the sash belt or — like Kourtney — wear it without.

Little black dress

We enjoyed watching adorable Reese Witherspoon carry her third child, Tennessee James. The bubbly blonde wore a fab pink, loose-fitting dress to Easter services and this elegant LBD to a private party given by Sir Paul McCartney.

Copy Reese with this Seraphine Luxe Black Lace Cocktail Dress . The flattering A-line cut doesn’t cling to the hips, and the separate silk satin belt shapes this fine dress into a glamorous empire-line cut.

Maxi dress

Nick Lachey has said that his wife VanessaMinnillo was the most beautiful pregnant woman in the world. The first-time mama-to-be was beautifully attired throughout her entire pregnancy. She easily pulled off the fitted maternity outfits, but she looked relaxed and gorgeous in the boho-chic maxi dress she wore to a Disney ABC Television Group Party in Beverly Hills.

You can steal Vanessa’s artsy look with the Jessica Simpson Short-Sleeve Uneven Hem Maternity Dress . For “maxi”mum comfort, pair the easy-to-wear floral print maxi dress with ballerina flats. Or go Hollywood and add a pair of sky-high heels or cowboy boots .

Baby sprinkle party
Just because you already have a child doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be showered with love for your next baby. Baby “sprinkles” are becoming very popular for second, third and subsequent babies — a much lower key gathering.

Let the love rain down

With minimal pressure and an informal feel to them, a baby sprinkle party is a lovely way to welcome a new addition.

Never heard of a baby sprinkle? Instead of "showering" the mother with gifts, as in a baby shower, you "sprinkle" her with just a few necessities. As the name suggests, a sprinkle is a light shower. If the child is a second or third child, mothers typically already have most of the supplies needed to care for a baby.

Sprinkle with the daily essentials

A sprinkle stocks repeat parents with basic replenishable items they'll need right away and go through quickly. For example: Diapers, diaper cream, baby bathroom essentials and wipes. New outfits, toys, bedding and books are lovely gifts too and guests of a sprinkle should not feel restricted from buying big ticket items, but a sprinkle is mostly about family and friends celebrating a new addition. If there is a big gap between children or a different gender is expected, a full baby shower might be in order, but always consult with the mother to see what she is comfortable with, what items are needed and create your invitation accordingly.

Since a baby sprinkle doesn't have the formality of a baby shower, it isn't necessary to go all out when compiling the guest list, decorating, catering, providing entertainment and offering baby shower favors. A coed celebration with children is perfectly acceptable in the case of a sprinkle, so that the expecting mom's husband and child/children can be there, too.

What's a shower without games?

Games can liven up a party and break the ice and most guests will expect to play a game or two, but leave this the mother's discretion. One fun game to consider and a great way to include big brother- or sister-to-be is to ask guests to write their best advice for the sibling on a 3x5 card, which can make a nice keepsake book. Another game for repeat parents is “Remember When"— where guests share stories of their personal experiences raising their children and/or of pregnancy. These can be categorized into “funny,” “embarrassing,” or “sweet,” among others and the mommy-to-be plays judge as to who gave the best stories in each category. This game is great for gleaning a few tidbits of advice about parenthood.

Whatever you do, don't forget older siblings!

A new baby is very exciting, but it can also be very worrisome for a child. Some simple ways you can help ease their insecurities are by including the name of older siblings on the invitations, give the big brother or sister a special role at the sprinkle or a project they can be in charge of, encourage guests to greet the older sibling and if you are hosting a Meet and Greet sprinkle, allow the older sibling to introduce the new baby. A small gift will also go a long way. Becoming a new mom for a second time is always exciting and a sprinkle is a perfect way to celebrate!

baby names for William AND Kate

Prince William is gearing up to be a father as the Palace has confirmed that Kate Middleton is pregnant!

To help the royal couple out, we have come up with baby boy names and baby girl names that are fit for a future king or queen.

Are you ready for a royal baby name bonanza? Kate Middleton has a royal bun in the oven — and this time the rumors are official, as the Palace confirmed her pregnancy in a statement:

“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news.“

The already thin Duchess is dealing with acute morning sickness, however, and is in the hospital.

“The Duchess was admitted this afternoon to King Edward VII Hospital in Central London with Hyperemesis Gravidarum,“ the statement from the Palace said. “As the pregnancy is in its very early stages, Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in the hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter.“

As she recuperates, we have some great baby name suggestions for her!

Baby names fit for a King

If the royal baby is a boy, the couple may consider naming their son William— or perhaps Charles, after Prince William’s father.

More than likely, however, the couple will use one of the above names as a middle name and choose a different first name for their royal baby. The royal family often opts for traditional names over trendy names, so the following boy names are all great choices:

The couple has embraced popular culture, so perhaps one of these cool preppy names will catch their eye?

Baby names fit for a Queen

If the Duchess is pregnant with a girl, the most obvious choice is to name her Diana, after Prince William’s mother. Diana would also make a lovely middle name, as well.

Elizabeth is another traditional royal family name that they may decide to pass on as a first or middle name. We also love the following classic baby girl names for a future Queen:

We doubt they will name her after Aunt Pippa, however the following girl names are vintage and chic, yet a bit more modern:

Prenatal and diagnostic testing: What to know before you test

For first-time moms or women who have high-risk pregnancies, the idea of prenatal testing can be scary and overwhelming. Dr. Myra Wick of the Mayo Clinic shares some of the most important questions couples should ask.

For first-time moms or women who have high-risk pregnancies, the idea of prenatal testing can be scary and overwhelming. Dr. Myra Wick of the Mayo Clinic shares some of the most important questions couples should ask.

Preparing for anything

When I discovered I was expecting my son, I was 36 and had several previous back surgeries. I was more concerned about whether pregnancy was going to cause my spine to implode than I was that my baby might not be healthy.

The issue of prenatal screening seemed pointless. My husband and I were ecstatic to welcome our child and while we, like every expectant parent, prayed for a healthy baby, we knew if something was “wrong,” it wouldn’t matter. Our baby was our baby.

First-trimester screening

It’s interesting to note that the ultrasound screenings I underwent in the first trimester of my pregnancy showed nothing abnormal.

First-trimester screening, which includes an ultrasound to examine the nuchal translucency and the level of two markers in the mother’s blood, has a detection rate for Down syndrome of approximately 85 percent, with a 5 percent false positive rate.

In addition, according to Dr. Myra Wick of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, who is board-certified in both OB-GYN and Medical Genetics, “Advanced level ultrasound in the second trimester will detect approximately 50 percent of cases of Down syndrome. Patients most commonly move forward for additional reassurance.”

It wasn’t until we received the results from blood screening that we became concerned.

According to the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy, first trimester screening test results are “considered positive for Down syndrome if the risk is 1 in 230 or greater.”

Blissful ignorance?

I have to admit, I had a nagging sense early on that something was wrong, even before we received the results of the first screening test, which shared the likely chances that our baby would have a genetic disorder.

Hearing those numbers for the first time wasn’t as scary as they might be now, simply because I didn’t know what a high-risk ratio sounded like. Our genetic counselor told us our unborn child had a one in 13 chance of having something called Trisomy 18.

To me, a former journalist who avoids math like cats avoid water, well, heck, that wasn’t so bad, right? I mean, if the baby’s chances were one in 13, that meant there were 12 other shots that things would be just fine. Right?

I was uneducated on the risks of genetic conditions, and I realize now that ignorance wasn’t bliss but rather a much more moderated panic.

Our baby’s risk of having Down syndrome was in the single digits . Basic research told us that Trisomy 18 came with a high risk of intrauterine death, or death the within the first year of life. People with Trisomy 21 had a life expectancy of 60 years.

I prayed for Down syndrome.

Weighing risk vs. 'yes or no' answers

Ultrasound FAQs

Dr. Wick recommends asking these questions after a patient undergoes an ultrasound:

  • Are there anomalies on the ultrasound?
  • If anomalies exist, will the fetus be able to survive them in the long term?
  • If the fetus is diagnosed with a non-life-threatening disorder but anomalies exist , ask to meet with the neonatologist and appropriate specialists .

The Mayo Clinic also offers an overview of common prenatal tests.

“Risk assessment is a difficult concept for many patients,” Dr. Wick says. “We all have a different perception of what is considered ‘high risk,’ and we all want a definitive yes-or-no answer, not a risk!

“Some patients consider 1/200 to be unacceptably high, and will proceed with testing. I have also had patients with a much higher risk, 1/25, decide that this is not high enough to proceed with additional testing,” Dr. Wick continues.

“The decision to proceed or not may be based on how the patient/couple will manage the pregnancy,” Dr. Wick says. “If termination is a consideration, these couples will usually proceed with invasive testing so that further management decisions can be made.

“If couples are not considering termination, then it may be reasonable to weigh the risks of the procedure versus the risk that the pregnancy is affected.”

Plan of delivery

Every delivery is different, and each couple must approach delivery with a plan that works for them.

“If the fetus has a lethal condition, it may also be useful to meet with the neonatologist to discuss management at delivery,” Dr. Wick advises. Depending on the baby’s condition, a couple may choose “comfort care” versus multiple interventions.

"You should also discuss plan of delivery with your provider,” Dr. Wick says. “These are obviously very sensitive issues.”

Hearing the results

At the beginning of our pregnancy, my husband and I agreed it didn’t matter what might be different about our child, we looked forward to meeting him or her and starting our family.

When the first screening results came back, the numbers were like an unexpected flare shooting into the sky. We talked at great length about the pros and cons of going further and having diagnostic testing. It was riskier to the baby because diagnostic tests are invasive, whereas the screening I’d undergone to that point was from simple blood tests.

Together, we agreed we wanted to know what was reasonable to find out. We wanted to be prepared, and, as we learned more about Trisomy 18 and Trisomy 21, we realized either scenario came with increased risks of heart defects. We decided we had to know more.

Diagnostic testing

At 18 weeks, I underwent an amniocentesis, a diagnostic test that’s often used to follow up on an abnormal screening test. Diagnostic tests can better confirm genetic conditions.

Dr. Wick explains, “Diagnostic testing is also referred to as invasive testing. This includes chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis .

“CVS is typically performed between 11 and 14 weeks. It involves taking a small sample of the placenta . This may be done with a needle through the abdomen or by passing a small catheter through the cervix . CVS is done under ultrasound guidance. The quoted risk of pregnancy loss is approximately 1 percent.

“Amniocentesis typically is done at or after 15 weeks and is also usually done under ultrasound guidance," Dr. Wick continues. "Risk of loss is generally quoted as 0.5 percent. Both CVS and amnio obtain fetal tissue, which can be used for chromosome analysis or other genetic testing.”

For us, prenatal testing also helped discover and track our son’s evolving hydrops condition. Hydrops is two or more of the following 1) ascites [fluid collection in the abdomen], 2) pleural effusion [fluid around the lungs] 3) pericardial effusion [fluid around the heart], 4) skin edema [e.g., fluid collection in the extremities, similar to what many women experience late pregnancy but usually more pronounced], 5) polyhydramnios [abnormally increased amniotic fluid].

“Hydrops can be associated with several conditions, including Down syndrome,” Dr. Wick explains, “but it generally carries a poor prognosis.”

{pageBreak}

Discovering a potentially lethal condition

“Prenatal testing can be a very important and emotional decision for parents,” Dr. Wick says. “If the infant has a lethal condition, discussion should include monitoring during labor .

Dr. Wick advises couples to plan ahead for either scenario, whether the child is delivered in good health or something goes wrong and the child does not survive delivery.

Acknowledging how difficult it will be to face these questions, Dr. Wick encourages couples to plan ahead and ask:

  • Will there be surgical interventions for a lethal condition or comfort care? “If you are at a small community hospital, your care provider may be more comfortable sending you to a tertiary center where there is more likely to be a ‘bereavement team’ and providers who have special training in the care of these families,” Dr. Wick says.
  • If the infant has problems and there will be interventions will there be specialists at the delivery ?
  • Antenatal testing , typically with ultrasound and/or monitoring of the infant’s heart rate tracing, can be used to assess for developments such as hydrops or abnormal blood flow in the infant. If the testing is abnormal, and the infant does not have a lethal condition then testing may help the care team make decisions about early delivery.

Learning to breathe smoothly

In our case, our son looked perfectly healthy via ultrasound on a Friday, and by Monday morning had quite a bit of fluid building in his left lung cavity. Our physicians consulted with other physicians in the Northeast and decided we should continue to monitor the situation.

By the following Friday, the fluid had increased, and I was on my way to the hospital. Before Charlie was born at 33 weeks, weighing 4 pounds, 14 ounces, maternal and fetal physicians removed most of the fluid in his lung cavity, in utero.

The rollercoaster had many curves and many dips

As I lay staring at one spot on the ceiling and trying to breathe smoothly and evenly, a physician inserted a needle into my abdomen, then into my uterus and into Charlie’s left lung cavity to withdraw fluid.

Twice, my husband watched as a nurse who had become a trusted friend helped guide each physician’s painstaking precision using ultrasound technology.

Those moments were perhaps the most vulnerable I will ever feel as a parent — or I certainly hope so. I was putting my child’s life in doctors’ hands, trusting their skill and expertise.

Trusting your medical team

When Charlie was born, he had a chest tube for one week before the fluid subsided and his lungs remained clear. I’ll never forget the incredible work, patience and compassion of the physicians who monitored Charlie, modified his treatment and ensured he could come home with us one month after he was born.

The rollercoaster had many curves and many dips, but throughout our journey, we had complete confidence in our physician, Dr. David C. Shaver, at Presbyterian Maternal and Fetal Medicine in Charlotte, North Carolina.

He never frightened us, and he never sugarcoated the truth. He asked for our thoughts, and respectfully and delicately shared his professional opinion when we hesitated.

The best illustration of his dedicated demeanor came one afternoon, midway through the pregnancy, when Charlie’s hydrops had resolved almost entirely, which we greeted with wary, nervous joy.

Dr. Shaver sat for what seemed like days, sliding the ultrasound device over my belly, pushing and prodding, then stopping and staring at the computer screens without expression. My husband and I exchanged nervous glances several times, as the exam went on and on.

Becky, our by-now beloved nurse, returned to the exam room and, upon seeing Dr. Shaver still studying the screen, said, “Oh, I didn’t know you were still looking! Everything OK?”

Dr. Shaver nodded. He never looked up from the screen. “Everything looks great,” he said calmly. “I’m just… being paranoid, I guess.”

My husband and I looked at each other, relief escaping audibly from our lips. “Dr. Shaver, you can watch for a week if you want,” I said.

His was the last hand I shook nearly 18 months later, as I prepared to have a scheduled C-section with our second child, our daughter. Parenthood is scary, and the moments leading up to childbirth are a whirlwind. Trusting your physician implicitly makes all the difference.

Back to basics

Before undergoing any testing, Dr. Wick says one of the most important questions for a couple to address head-on is how they will use test results. “Will the results change management of the pregnancy ? Does the couple agree on how they will follow up an abnormal test result?”

As Dr. Wick points out, “Some couples have never discussed their thoughts on termination — not all partners agree on this!”

Everyone reacts differently

While my husband and I agreed early on that termination was not an option, we each had very different reactions to prenatal testing and the results we received.

We are in love with our little boy

After watching me undergo the amnio procedure, my husband returned to work and promptly Googled support groups for parents of children with Down syndrome. We hadn’t gotten a diagnosis yet, but he was already reaching out.

As fate would have it, a local DADS Group was meeting that very night in a neighboring town, and Jeremy attended. There, he met families who will be part of our lives forever. He found hope and positivity, which was exactly what he needed.

Alternately, I spent months unable to really speak with anyone about the diagnosis for a variety of reasons, mostly because of overwhelming guilt. Fate again intervened when my husband scheduled dinner with two couples from the DADS Group on what turned out to be the night before we learned Charlie’s hydrops had returned.

The next afternoon, I was admitted to the hospital, and three days later, we welcomed our beautiful son.

Only one regret — wasted time

Ours is an ongoing story and, without question, one of the best love stories I’ve ever known. We are in love with our little boy, and everyone who gets to know him has come to understand what an overwhelmingly positive difference he has made in our lives.

I have no regrets about having the prenatal testing done; for better or worse, my husband and I came to terms with the diagnosis at our own pace. Any remaining worry slipped away once we looked at our son and touched his silky skin.

What I do regret is the tremendous amount of time I wasted worrying about what I realize now were baseless concerns. Knowing and loving Charlie outweighs any challenge we may face together.
